SciFi and Fantasy Art: Picture of Dignity: Zoey the Rat

This is gift art for my friend Brooke.

Zoey is Brooke's little rat whom she recently lost to an illness. I made this picture as a memorial for her.

I can't do straight portraiture to save my life; this is a fact. I must have some kind of psychological block. However, I can do a decent job of it if I put the subject into a costume. If the subject is a human, they get fuzzified. If the subject is an animal, they get anthropomorphized. Either way, it seems to work.

The background is a watercolor wash. I created the texture by spritzing the still-damp watercolor with a spray bottle. The drawing is Prismacolor pencils. It took about 30 hours all together. The original is 9x12 inches.

This picture definitely embodies the grace of a wonderful soul. You have captured the rattiness very well and her features are very nicely done. I like the dress, too. Have I said enough yet? I love this picture. Sorry this isn't very constructive but thanks for explaining how you did the textured effect.
