SciFi and Fantasy Art: Insomnia

This, although it doesn't fit in to standard fantasy, fits here still, I believe. This is my favourite work that I've done and I'm very proud of it. It was an assignment as part of a study on Salvador Dali that I did in my drawing and painting class last year. The assignment was to do a brief study on the work of Dali and to come up with our own surrealistic composition based on his work and the three objects we drew out of a hat. My objects were floor, bowl, and glass. I thought for a long time how to incorporate these things and decided I wanted to have them mean something to me as well as relate to eachother. At that point and time, I was suffering a terrible bout of insomnia, and sleep was all I could think of. The desert is the desperate, hopeless feeling that lack of sleep gets you after a while. The window itself is sleep, and the green landscape beyond is the peace sleep will bring you. The pouring floor is meant to represent the difficulty laying the path to sleep. The bed is, obviously, the bed. The blood on the floor and pillow and dripping from the window represent the frustration of the whole ordeal. (Acrylic on paper, original dimensions 24x36 inches.)

This really instills dark feelings...I look at it and feel trapped and at the end of my rope. I can't say that this is something I'd like hanging over my fireplace, but I feel it is none the less quality art..it makes me feel something, even if the feelings are negative. Nice work!

Oh, a real masterpiece. I really like the blood on the window and the way the floor pours down. And the bed looks frightening. This is wonderful work!

Cripes, was Salvatore Dali crazy! Did you watch any documentaries on his artwork & performances? The cat-piano performance was...well... disturbing. And I love the checkered floor in your painting. I was insomniatic for quite a few years... frustration doesn't even begin to describe that half-dead/half-alive feeling of stupor. But your painting lays it all out, with a gruesome touch. 2Thank you! Yeah, I did a few research projects on him. I think the most disturbing incident was the one that involved a statue made of fruit of a girl he liked, and, well, you get the idea. Disturbed, but in such insanity lies some sort of genius.

This picture is my mood for the past three weeks. When I was trying to figure out my mood, I could not do it. You just summed it up in one painting. Wow.

Dali, although not quite as daring as Luis Buńuel, remains the flagship of the surrealist movement, and pictures like this remind me why. This just rocks beyond all belief. I never was able to emulate his style that well, but i certainly succeeded in emulating his infamous moustache! (Check out my bio pic) I swear, I'm gonna go broke at 17 buying moustache wax...
