SciFi and Fantasy Art: Bubbly Mermaid - steps

The different steps in the colouring of my bubbly mermaid.

1) B/W lineart. Made during a guest-lecture.

2) Base colours. 12 layers and aprocimately 90 minuttes of colouring.

3) Tail and fins has gotten shadows and highlights now. The bubbles also has gotten more details. The picture now has 30 layers, and I've spend another hour on it.

4) Skincolouring and starting on the hair. 9 more layers and another hour spent.

5) The actual mermaid is now coloured (Boy does hair take time). Including the bacolour the hair got 5 different layers. The entire picture now got 42 layers, and it took me another 75 minuttes to get here.

6) The finished picture. Background and lighteffects are added. The picture got 50 layers, and it took me somewhere between 5 and 6 active workhours to colour it.

In aded a comment ot this ages ago, Something along the lines of * Wow, so thats how you do it. Its very helpfull and quit interesting when artists show the process of their eforts.* Well good to see you've readded it again. Maybe you should try experamenting with different water fetures. Like you could have a vampire mermaid swimming in a ocean of blood, if you wanted to try that 12 Amazing job

:-) Rikke Lindskov ´Gwennafran´ Loft replies: "Well, thanks again for commenting. ^-^ The idea of blood in water does sounds facinating. I'll keep it in mind if I ever get the time. ^_~"

WOW! this actually helped me on a school project, thanks! *just the design concept not the mermaid*
OMFG that is such a cool idea i mean a vampire (which i am obsesed with) Mer/maid/creature (wich i also have a moderate obsesion with) in a sea of blood (which, don't think me THAT wierd, i happen to like). if you could get the blood with that ripple effect it would be really scary, providing you actually color it. talking about ripple effect i think that it is one of the most detailed water pick EVER, and like i have been looking at these sort of pictures for years...it is just simply and amazingly the best

:-) Rikke Lindskov ´Gwennafran´ Loft replies: "Glad to be of inspiration. And thanks a lot. ^___^"

woooooooow, this is sooooooo interesting to wach...!!! thank you so much for sharing this with us2!!! i’m all a baby when it comes to computer colouring, i just can’t imagine how the hell that could ever work... and reading how long it takes you to do it reassures me since i now know it takes MUCH more time than i thought and it’s not only my fault it’s taking me so much time;-) hehe... she looks gorgeous in colours, you did a great job2!!!

:-) Rikke Lindskov ´Gwennafran´ Loft replies: "Computer colouring isn’t just three clicks on the mouse and the picture looks gorgeous. 12 It takes just as long to do decent digital art as it does to make decent traditionally coloured images. And it takes a long time to learn how to use the programs as well, which means that the first computer coloured images you make will take a lot longer than the next ones. 12
Like everything else it pretty much comes down to practice and patience. 2"
