SciFi and Fantasy Art: Critters 7

The Avastryx [Pronounced and often spelled; Avahrstryx] (Avastryxis dryorapturis). This is a major falcon-like raptor native to Arkabia. It is about 1.5 meters long, hunts in a telepathically linked triad, and is very intelligent. The one shown is a female and she is swallowing a Torrelli's Dragon-rat (Muradracus torrelli). Each front wing arm is equipped with poison dart cannons and there are retracting razor sharp spines on the underside of each pinion. There is a pair of small hind wings (Leech wings) whichh control precision flying (even backwards and upside down flying). The tail has slashing and venomous spines and there are retracting blade-like fangs in the upper mandible. The beak is similar to the dranthuhris's multi-part beak. As with all Klagosian forms, their vocal mechanism is external--A series of complex 'clamshells' in a valved orifice located in the underside of the outer lower mandibles. They make a silken nest- as the Ralidan's and Dranthuhris- They are highly intelligent and trainable, but, can be very, VERY, dangerous.(The only natural animal 'native to Arkabia' capable of taking out a military Raultahrlaca !) Before a way to communicate with them was found, they killed several of the first humans on Arkabia. It almost ended the mission... It is a descendant of the Durthaulnoan Klagosian sea serpents which were transplanted to Arkabia over 200 million years ago by the Dranthuhris. They used time travel to rescue various species from Durthalno before its sun went nova five billion years ago. The Avahrstryx averages around 300 years longevity and has been selected as the National 'bird' of Arkabia- fitting somehow. For those whom may be interested, I drew the color version in early 1995 on a large sheet of standard paper. Color pencils. The B/W is from 1991 (or there abouts.)

I like this one very much, but I would call him more a dragon then a critter. But of course, you found an own name, and thats much better. I like the coloured version best.
