SciFi and Fantasy Art: ~DRAGON-CAT~

I finally got my rump in motion and re-scanned this old drawing and worked it's file size down to something acceptable for Elfwood postings. It was the first I ever made of my 'Monster Anatomy' series. I studied Bats and Pterosaurs for weeks before drawing it! The Dragon-Cat is a horrible monster when it gets angry. The Demented Usani Empire's military created it as a 'Tamer' version of the Raultahrlaca, but, try telling that to its plethora of unfortunate victims. Dragon-Cats can swoop out of the sky in day or night pouncing on practically anything that can't eat them first! Fully sentient, Dragon-Cats have formed their own Kingdom and live apart from the Human kingdoms. Trade does exist between Humans and Dragon-Cats.

An awesome picture... Uhm, if you wanted to be more specific about the chemical fire, I'd say either natural napalm and nitrogen? I think... or ehm... there is a chemical that ignites at the slightest friction(ie. contact with air molecules) Just some little facties.

:-) Eric R. Vondell ~ 'Tralfaz Aquilleon' replies: "When I designed my original Chemical Flame Breath Mechanism it was for a small Dragon-Like "Imaginary Friend" I made up to satisfy my child Psychiatrist--who thought it was strange that I didn't have an imaginary friend. (The last thing you want is for a Psychiatrist to think there's something wrong with you..*hehe*).. Well, I loved critters and the weirder the critter, the more I gravitate towards it...I was probably the only 12 year old kid in the 1970's to know what a Bombardier beetle is.....And they come pretty close to being able to generate fire via a sophisticated binary chemical mechanism...It's the sort of thing that looks like something Dr. Moreau would have created in his genetic engineering experiments, rather than something nature could have contrived at all ! I had to come up with something that would really surprise my shrink. It did! Because what I came up with and still employ is the following mechanism...it has been modified and made more realistic, however, it is the most fully plausible of all Flame Breath mechanisms...(And Yes, I know the idea has recently shown up in the movie "Reign of Fire"....But, if you check out my "Future Dragon" picture, Paying close attention to when it was posted--a reply to a comment from October 2000--you will notice that I mentioned how they breathe fire nearly three years ago! So That's proof that I had it before the movies....or anyone else! )~~~ The basic Mechanism works like this; Formerly Venom Glands to spray nasty burning chemicals at would be predators.(Mostly various Peroxines and Hydroquinones that mix together and become very volatile as their molecules encounter Oxygen molecules in the air..) I have derived the following for the basic mechanism ;~~~ H202 + C6H42= hydroquinone + 2H20 + C6H402=quinone + O2 +N combined with Enzymes to accelerate reaction = free Oxygen & Hydrogen mixing and interacting with one another, and, Poof! You get a short burst of actual flame. It's really a lot simpler than "Natural Napalm"~~~ .~~~ If you refer to the Raultahrlaca picture you can see that I placed the flame glands on opposite sides of the throat. This is so they cannot touch and make a really nasty soar throat for the dragon. In the Raultahrlaca, the tongue is drawn back against the glands and the arrangement creates an atomizer to make use of the dragon's expelled air from the lungs to propel the two chemicals out of the mouth while simultaneously mixing them with each other and with air. the result is a nasty flaming spray of lethal propensity! It has an effective range of just a few meters, however, it will continue burning on the attacker's flesh until extinguished by water or dirt. In the natural world such would only be needed by small animals like little gliding lizards who -while they don't have such on Earth- would be able to use it as a defense against predatory birds and monkeys....Now just take this to an evolutionary adaptation retained and improved upon by successive generations of bigger flying lizards...and you have a fire breathing dragon of the classical medieval designs! The Dragon's saliva has enzymes to both trigger the reactions and to instantly deactivate the reactions when the jaws close. Dragons tend to drool a lot for this reason. Of course, dragons would only utilize this weapon sparingly, as it is limited to about 15 short bursts before the glands must recharge....Unlike in the various movies and cartoons where the fiery breath can be sustained for several minutes and blow up things that are not explosive, in reality, it can only be short bursts of flaming fluids and gravity will act upon these fluids as will wind and other factors, thus, greatly limiting the effective range....In my Sharaulnian Dragons, Flame breath is used mainly for visual communications at distances...such as part of courtship displays....and not usually needed as a weapon at all.~~~ Natural Napalm?..."Reign of Fire" again...I was shocked by their use of a theory that I had invented completely on my own 25 years ago!, but, I do have the better explanation than what you get from a rather dull and kind of moronic movie--they really could have done better...the Raultahrlaca-like dragons, could have been more realistically portrayed--The scenario is illogical from the start and just gets worse!...I loved the Dragon action though...only thing about the flick I did like!~~~Personally, I know of few (Actually, None on Earth) biological systems that would be capable of producing actual Napalm in this fashion for use as a defensive weapon....But, it is not truly needed with the right enzymes and accellerants.~~~ "

YIPE! THis creature scares me just looking at it. It's dazzling work! So Real and powerful looking. Again with the Old Alien text book. You really shouldn't destroy your last connection to your home planet like this. It really does look like you just ripped a page from an old "Martian" Encyclopedia of Animals and scanned it. It's Really That Good! Really, Really!

This one is really cool! Yes, I can imagine how dangerous a dragoncat could be when I think of Dinah flapping around in the rooms, sitting over me on a cupboard and remembering me shen wants to have food sending a little bit of fire towards my hair... hehe... this is one of those anatomicals you do I really like. but I also could imagine her in a sky full of clouds. The pose is great!

HAHAH!! you fools!! i am a dragon-cat but not that one.. i am a human with a cat tail, cat ears adn dragon wings.. dont belive me... go to alisha "dragon_grrl" giroux and go to her zone gallery adn go to dragonmasterkiki...and THAT is a dragon cat!! I AM A DRAGON-CAT!!

15 Eric R. Vondell ~ 'Tralfaz Aquilleon' replies: "Most folk are unaware that there are many kinds of Dragon-Cats. Dragons actually Love Cats (They like Wolves and Raptors too) and often use their powerful, strange, mystical abilities to breed with Cats, Wolves, and Raptors (And Especially with Gryphons, Hence, Dracogryphs and Gryphragons), resulting in some rather spectacular critters. So you are merely just one of a plethora of interesting Draky-Mutts lurking about in the Outer Limits of the Twilight Zone! ~~~The Draky-Mutt depicted in this drawing is the legendary terror known as "The Tannaran Razor-Wing"! His name is "Star-Cat", (Because most human folk once believed that he came from outer space)and he's partly Leopard, partly Tairlanga, Partly Cheshire Dragon, and partly Raultahrlaca....Your comment reminds me of my own reaction to the "Death Gleaners" from "The Future is Wild"; I thought; "Those are not Death Gleaners! They're just big, adorable, cuddly, flying fox fruit bats on a high Protein/Low carb diet. Now, The Tannaran Razor-Wing, That's a Real "Death Gleaner!" .....Put my Tannaran Razor-Wings in the world of "The Future is Wild" and there would be Nothing they couldn't take as prey! If that's the future of life on Earth, then My Razor-Wings are going to love it! The whole planet is one big "all you can eat buffet" of ridiculously easy prey!~~ Poor Babocari, Monkey is one of the Razor-Wing's favorite snack foods--and they like their monkey meat "Extra-crispy"! (That's What the particle beam cannons in the Razor-Wing's eyes are for--Microwaved Monkey! Krunchy Killercaras! Fricsaseed Falcon-Fly! Souffle' of Swampus! Crispy Colorful Calamari! Roasted Rattle-Back Rodent with a Sprinkling of Spinks! And last but, certainly not least, Zesty Spit-Fire Humming Birds-for a spicy taste sensation to liven up any dish!).....The folks who came up with "The Future is Wild" quite clearly forgot to factor in the descendants of all those magnificent, wonderfully evil, genetically engineered Monsters from the last days of the age of humans! At least, humans are finally good for something!"
