SciFi and Fantasy Art: The PastIts often forgotten, but the Dwarves were having a hard time in Middle-earth during 'The Hobbit', with the dragon having taken up residence in the Lonely Mountain. It was tough going for them, many of them were forced to wander about looking for work. Many having to mine and shovel coal for their bread. Here is some fanart I did for a fanfic I'm writing called 'Of Fire and Stars', you can find it at Fanfiction.net. Its about Gimli's early years (before the Fellowship, taking place during the Hobbit). Its a Gimli centric story as well as book-based, not movie-based, I'm keeping it as close to book canon as I can. Anyway, here is a sketch of Gimli's family traveling with what little they managed to grab, after their caravan is attacked and destroyed by orcs. The female is Lady Nei, Gimli's mother, along with a younger Gloin (with the little girl on his head), and his brother Oin (in the back) along with Gimli and his siblings. Think you can spot the six year old Gimli ~_^? I had a lot of fun with this, especially the children, and since these are 'Tolkien' Dwarves the female has a beard. |

But Tolkien actually fully stated that female dwarves absolutely had facial hair. Its just that his discription of them was such that it kind of eluded like they may have had beards. But he never actually positively said for a fact though. Something about them being of very similar build and appearence and when they went out from their homes. They dressed in clothes akin to the men. So whether they had some form of facial hair or wore fake beards for disguise for self defense. Or no beards at all is entirely up to each indiviual reader. | |
| 16 Sep 2007 | Roxanne Hancock | I think I've seen this before...but ayway, it's one of my favorite Elfwood artworks. Nei, as I wrote in the other pic of her, isn't your typical version of "beauty", but she's lovely nonetheless. I love how strong she looks, and it only adds to her beauty. | |
