'His face was as familiar to me as my own mother’s, for although he visited only seldom, I had committed every detail of his appearance to memory. His hair was ebony black, and worn in the long, tight braid that was fashionable with Elven soldiers. Like all Elves, his skin was fair, and made to appear even more so by the black frame of hair. His eyes were dark, and it seemed to me that they appeared sometimes as blue and sometimes as a deep rich violet. He had a haunted look about him, as if great troubles rested on his thin shoulders, but when he smiled his features would become as bright as starlight.'
