SciFi and Fantasy Art: Twin Riders at Sunrise

Well, I promised Katharine a picture because she guessed my quote right... 10 hours later (combined, not straight) here it is. Let us bow our heads in remembrance of the colored pencils who gave their lives for this piece.
orig size=8.5X14 in.

These twin riders (so called because they ride together in a double saddle - Katharine's original idea) prepare to make way at dawn after spending the night under the cover of the forest. The riders have been friends a very long time, as is tradition of twin riders, and though the young man looks amused by his tiny companion, he doubts neither the strength of his heart nor the reach of his arm.
The scenery developed on its own into what I perceived as Rohan when I read the books. The horse is a breed strong enough to carry two riders, but lean and swift enough to give effective chase in battle... as specified by Katharine. I know there's a name for these horses, but I can't think of it at the moment so it's up to Katharine. Her story after all. ^_^

Now that is a beautiful picture. Those colored pencils certainly didn't give their lives in vain. You can just feel the soft, long grasses and the warmth of the sun as it rises above the horizon. Every detail is great! Postitively beautiful.

To me it looks like that of a Gyspy Vanner. Or posibly a pershon? Fresians if bred with a gyspy vanner will come out as a paint might I add. There are tons of draft breeds that could be titled as this one. I love it. Also. To my knowledge there is no such thing as a double saddle.

12 Sarah M. Zagacki replies: "i don't think there was such thing as a double saddle until katharine invented one."

Wow. That's really awesome! I love the sun rise(set?) and the way the light falls on the hills. When I first looked at this picture, Rohan did come to mind(I don't know if it's just in the movie or in the book too; I've only read the hobbit and the fellowship, but I thought of the Rohan kids whose mother sent them off to warn... someone? It's been a while since I saw it last. Anyhow...). I never knew things like this could be done with colored pencils! It's beautiful. How big is it really?

:-) Sarah M. Zagacki replies: "ooh, you should definitely watch TTT again, but make sure it's the extended version, which makes the movie 3x better. but yeah, thank you very much for the comment! ^_^ i think the original size is around 12x19"."

You see, that's the great thing about having a dad who likes them so much that he just hapenned to get the extended version of all three movies for christmas over three years : ) Return of the king is my favorite, though, so it's the one most watched. Anyways, colored pencils rock! I'm doing a big picture with them right now, and it's sooooo much fun to do...

That is so beautiful. I am in awe! The colors are fabulous! And the panoramic view is breathtaking even if it's just a bunch of grassy hills! It's wonderful and sunny and colorful and I really congradulate you on your texture technique, it's quite impressive.
