SciFi and Fantasy Art: Congolese Spider plant

The Congolese Spider Plant, arachno dendronum, is reputed to live in the depths of the Congo basin. It is debatable wheter or not it is either a plant or an animal. A parent plant will preduce up to a dozen spider like protrusions each with it's own primative nervous system. These protrusions behave independatnly to each other exhibiting animal like behaviour such as web building and hunting. Food caught by 'spiders' provides energy for the parent plant in a proces similar to a venus flytrap or pitcher plant. No specimans have been recorded to date and only one image is known.

The real spider plant comes from southern Africa and is used as a house plant. It has long thin leaves that look a bit like spider legs. The species name comes from the Greek words arakhne and dendron for spider and tree respectivly.

Excellent colours, good lights, nice concept. All together: eyecatching picture.

1 Shelz Keast replies: "Thanks! I was trying to get the lighting looking good and the colours were fun to do (though perhaps the spider is a little over the top with pink). "

What a neat concept. You can find all kinds of creepy and interesting things in that place.

Na, you can never go overboard with pink.

Is it a real spider? Or did you make that first bit up?

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "It's not a real spider, but there is a plant called a spider plant. (along the same lines as my horse-raddish picture)"

Taking common names of plants and animals is so much fun 2 Dragonfly... butterfly... elephant ears... palm trees... the list goes on and on!

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "I'm surprise some one else knows about elephant ears/ tamu. I love those plants, okay not love, but they are pretty."

I hate spider...........SORRY.Scratchh!!!!!

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "Nothing wrong with not liking spiders. I'm weird, I'm fine with spiders (the little jumping ones are cute) but will freak out if a web touches me."

Actually I have a few spiders in my apartment. They don't "bug" me. That's right I have a few free websites at home and I have free webhosting and design. :c)

Interesting shape for a spider. But I think a big pink spider might be worse than a huge, hairy black and brown tarantula.

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "Only a few spiders eh? Well the spider that make my home theirs aren't the web building type (excluding daddy-long-legs) but they do like to lurk in the cupboards. I think they, like everything else, are breeding at the moment. Oh, and our garden's dragon population has had a nice increase. The spider's colour was inspired by true life spiders that mimic the colouration of flowers and ambush their dinner."

Hehe... What a nicely illustrated pun... Cute

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "Thanks, again."

Cool. It’s neat how you even invented a fictional scientific description of it. I like it.

Eeeeeee creepy! I’m a huge fan of spiders, though i don’t dislike them, i’m just nervous! How big is that spidy cos it’s a very scary idea!

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "It’s not that big- it’s just very close. It would be about the size of a large saucer."
