SciFi and Fantasy Art: Horse-Radish

“The ‘Horse-radish’ is a most curious creature, for most of its life is spent underground much like a common root. But if one were to dig it up one would find a most extraordinary sight, for its appearance bears a remarkable likeness to that of an unborn foal or calf. Many of these ‘embryonic seedlings’ must fall prey to the appetites of rabbits, cows and other grazing beasts. It has been speculated that these creatures of plants, being neither truly plant nor animal, live for less than a year. With the last new moon of Summer, by which time they have reached full maturity, they uproot themselves and take flight across the fields. Mature individuals are similar in size to the rabbit and appear to need no sustenance. It is during this one night that the seeds of all future ‘horse-radishes’ are sown. Sadly there has been a marked decline in the numbers of this unique creature in the past few years.” An unknown naturalist 1652.

10 Jan 2008	Anonymous	Loading... would you give me authorization to use this idea in a novel, only as a walk-on sort of thing nothing with a role, just something I would like to say in a chapter in which some characters walk along a field and the horse radishes are emerging from the ground to gallop along the field on the night of summer in which they fully mature? I would give you full credit, of course. Shelz Keast replies: "Since you've asked so nicely and say you'll give me credit you have permission. I feel rather flattered now. It might have been a good idea for you to put an e-mail address, then at least I know you'll get my reply."
