SciFi and Fantasy Art: Mars

“A colony on Mars”

Voyager 3 log 07/7/37

Large dust storms detected on the surface of the planet Mars. Unable to obtain clear photographic records of the planet’s surface. However sensors detected highly concentrated pockets of life between 1-100m below the planet’s surface. Possibility of highly organised communities living below the Martian surface and similar to terrestrial termites.

The sky isn’t too bad in this picture. The blue bugs on the ‘termite mound’ may be hard to see but they resemble flies a little. The bugs are not part of the colony but are raiding it in much the same way that ant sometimes raid termite mounds. ‘Termite mound’ based on those found in northern Australia. I'm finaly getting the hang of using a graphics tablet, but still have quite a bit
of practise to go.

Very nice detail in this, I love the distant curve of the planet, it makes the mound and the flies seem to be really massive.

The orange is deceptive isn't it? Since we all know that Mars is brutally cold even in the sun. Great picture of the surface of Mars.

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "I always thought that I hadn't put enough detail into the planet's surface. I think this was the last one done with a mouse..."

Wow... I really love the feeling of this, the colors and the sheer expanse. It's not extremely detailed, but sometimes that's even better than a supremely detailed piece, especially concerning landscapes. It really gives the viewer a sense of scale. Lovely piece.

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "Wow... Thanks for such an apreciative comment. Go out into the Australian outback and there is a whole lot of nothing with no detail."

the colours, again, look absolutely fantastic...!!!

MARS! Yay, my most favourite planet (besides Earth, of course). If only they could find life on the planet, it would be so exciting. I am patiently awaiting the day when Spirit and Opportunity pick up some signs...

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "There might have *been* life on Mars, but it’s died out. Though I have heard something about trace amounts of methane being found in the atmosphere. Methane being a short lived chemical normally produced by living organisms (I think there are a couple of other ways it can occur naturally though). So there could well be micro-organisms under the Martian surface."
