SciFi and Fantasy Art: Flying Romans and the Gaul from Hell

This is the preliminary version; you can compare it to the final. It's supposed to show a super-powered Gaul fighting off some Roman Legionaires, so I've tried to get the armor, weapons, and costume fairly close for late Republican Rome. This version was done in pencil on paper that's been erased and redrawn so much it's got holes in it. I had to fix up the scan quite a bit in Photoshop to make the thing read at all. The topmost legionaire bothered me, and he's quite different in the final version. What do you think?

Woo! Always nice to see Romans getting their butts kicked. If that one soldier is still bothering you, maybe you could erase him and put another in his place: maybe someone with his feet still on the ground, but with a look of terror on his face and flinching backward to avoid a blow. I was also thinking that you could add a few more Romans, maybe in the bottom left corner. 'Cause they'd probably attack your Gaul in a big formation, not one-on-one, right?

Who is the hunter? Were they ambushed by the Gaul or were they hunting it? Patroling? The background looks bleek so I'm guessing they were moving from one station to another. Hunting: ranged weapons. Patrol: Light and Fast. But, on a move they would be in formation an likely be ambushed from the side or rear. If it's not an ambush then I believe the formation would still be noticable. The Roman Empire didn't last because a lack of discipline. One more thing: I believe that the soldier on the left would be attacking the flank. It's an opening that his friends paid for with their lives. I hope I've given you something to think about.

luv a good fight pic. but if ya want a great fight pic then i'd suggest making the gaul's movement a bit more dynamic he looks more like he's swatting flies then kicking ass try that and you'll have one sweet picy.

Darn! I thought I _did_ make him dynamic. Any advice on what to do to make him more so?

I think all the figures on the right of the page are lovely...the only suggestion I have to give is that the two creeping up on the left have no motion to them...can you make them look sneakier? lol

Yeah, they do look pretty static, don't they? I think the centurian looks a little better in the final version, but the guy on the left isn't any better.

It does not look like a werewolf to me....

Um, it's not supposed to.

YEEEAAAAH!!!!!!! KILL EM ALL!!! Sorry, child of the Gauls in the room. Ooooh, I like it. He looks the way the Roman soldiers depicted the Gauls too, just so they wouldn't lose face. Oye, never liked the Romans. Argh, caffeine and sleep-deprivation has taken its toll. I'll stop now, I just love it so much! Do more! Do many many more!

Thank you for all your comments, Gaul-child.

The Romans would perform a solid frontal attack, first skewering the Gaul with pilums and hacking him down with their gladii. I doubt he could break their scutums, so explain the picture. How did the line shatter and become scattered? Where are the other 55 men and their Centurion? Cohorts always fight together.

Hey, come on! Why is everybody here complaining about the formation (or lack thereof)? Can't you see: they were all sitting around drinking their famous Roman wine, telling jokes that weren't funny, and eating their lunches when, suddenly... *DUN-NUN_NA_NU-UN* the Gaul from Hell attacked! Personally, I don't think they'd have time to form up, if these were the circumstances. And if anybody wants to know where the food and wine is, well I'll tell you: the Gaul ate it. Yep, that's what made the drunken Romans angry enough to not run away from him (because he does look slow enough). The Gaul, well... the Gaul scares me. 'Weally, Centuwion? I'm surpwised to hear a man like you wattled by a wabble of wowdy webels.' Nyaha, I couldn't help but think of that... BTW: very creative work.

The three romans at the top right corner look good, you just need to make the romans in the bottom left corner a bit more violent, instead of just standing there watching there mates get slaughtered, and by the way I think the Gaul looks great.Altogether its a really cool picture.
