SciFi and Fantasy Art: Extra Credit

8-1/2 by 11 inches, ink on paper. (Now I remember why I’ve always hated ink: you can't fix mistakes.) Here we have a group of students from Arcane University: an art major, a meteor-ologist, and a mechanical engineer. They are collaborating on an interdisciplinary group project for extra credit. Some of my other drawings are kind of grim, and I wanted to lighten things up a bit with this cartoony drawing. I’m not very happy with this one, and I will probably do it over when I have time. I plan to get rid of the grass so the characters show up better, straighten up the art book, and enlarge some of the writing enough that it might be readable once it’s scanned.

No comments? I'm surprised, we could all do with some more humor on this gallery. Anyways, I just thought that the tree in the back look a little too regular to me.

:-) Scott E. 'Sven' Johnson replies: "Yeah, KL, you're right. That's one of a number of problems with this picture, but I was sort of in a hurry to finish it. Eventually, I'll probably do some tree studies and try to get around to redoing this. In the mean time, everyone should feel free to tell me what else I need to fix."

this i love - "oh it was sad so sad - it was sad so sad - it was sad when that colony came down ..." - you can tell how long it's been since i've been to a con...

One question: What in the world is the story behind this picture? Did some faery mercanaries, along with a six foot rabbit, attack a human encampment just to get struck with a meteor? What??

:-) Scott E. 'Sven' Johnson replies: "Jackalope, the story is that 3 students from Arcane U. are cooperating to try to slay a carnivorous rabbit. The rabbit has smashed the engineer's contribution to the effort (the clockwork soldier), but fortunately, the artist and meteorologist are having better luck using their arcane talents. The meteorologist (meteorologists study meteors, right?) is using cartoon Voodoo techniques, calling a meteor by stabbing a pin into an globe/orrery. The jock/art student is assisting by harnessing the power of symbols in art (he drew an 'X' on the ground, where the students placed the bait)."

HAVE YOU SEEN THE MOVIE THE BLOB? DOES THAT PREHAPS GIVE YOU AN IDEA? BUT I MUST SAY GOOD JOB MAN!

Um, no offence, but I thought that the rabbit was a dog.. a shorter nose perhaps?

:-) Scott E. 'Sven' Johnson replies: "I think maybe I should have had the ears pointing up. I made them droop, in an attempt at a frowny, hopelessly-resigned-to-fate sort of expression, but it may not have worked so well."
