SciFi and Fantasy Art: Me and my PouchieMe and Stella (my giant pouched rat) got woken up at 4:30 this morning by a fire drill. Well, she was pretty pissed at getting dragged downstairs for nothing, and she kind of flipped out in the elevator on the way back up. She was in a cat carrier, of course, so she couldn't really hurt anyone, but she was jamming her nose through the bars, biting stuff, and stamping her feet. There was this guy standing across from me with tattoos all over his arms--the sort of dude you wouldn't expect to be afraid of an innocent wee pouchie--but he didn't take his eyes off her. He was all scrunched up in the corner, all 'oh no! It's a scary animal!', and Stella was all 'Kill! Kill! Kill!', and I was all 'ha, ha!'. Yeah. Anyway. You'd have thought she was really the size I drew her in this cartoon, the way this dude was looking at her. She's really a cute little critter, though. Harmless. Well, she bites, but apart from THAT, she's harmless.
(Obviously, Stella is not really anywhere NEAR the size shown in this picture. A giant Gambian pouched rat is generally no more than 12-17 inches long, plus tail. I haven't measured Stella--she won't stay still--but I would guess she's about 14-15 inches long from nose to bum.)

| 2 Apr 2004 | Tanya Kozik | The girl looks all inimpressed. The rat looks all self-absorbed. The drawing looks all nifty-cool-like, what with a slightly Edward Gorey feel to it, and most beautiful strokes. | |
| 4 Apr 2004 | Vanessa Nelissen | Again beautiful, I love your details, like the hearts in her hair, the frame and I really love her eyes, enchanting. | |
| 2 Oct 2004 | Megan 'wolfisheyes' Webb | Very very cute. ^-^ Your rat in this picture reminds me of the R.O.U.S.'s from the Princess Bride. Ever seen that movie? It's soooo FUNNY!! Definitely an awesome cult classic; I recommend it to everyone.
I love the style you took to draw this picture. It's fun to draw pictures of yourself in everyday life, right? I do it all the time ^-^ And you have a very good handle on your shading, especially on your rat's fur. Nice accents too, like the border and hearts.
Again, very nice job. | |
| 28 Jun 2005 | Bram Gerritsen | Maybe the tattoo dude had a bad rat experience in his early childhood ? Anyway you drew a lovely picture showing how much you love your pouchie. Im more of a cat person but I really like Stella, wether she bites or not. | |
| 20 Dec 2007 | dragonette | I've always found that people freak out at rats regardless of their size... even my harmless little fancy rats. For some reason... its the tail, which I don't get cus that's my favorite part.
PS the pics adorable... I want a pouchie now. hehe
| 24 Apr 2008 | Stephanie S. K. Marbach | hehe, i really like that little girl !!! somehow she reminds me a bit of tim burton’s style ! and the rat at her side goes very well together with her. i love her curls and the details of the other curls around her and the hearts hanging down. it looks great! | |
