SciFi and Fantasy Art: The Magic of Tsumeryujin

This was a title image for a short little introduction I did for some friends on the magic of Tsumeryujin, a fantastical medieval Japanese like universe that I started to create a number of years ago (and still work on today). It features a Yamabushi monk in the background. In Tsumeryujin, the yamabushi summon 'magic' through prayer and devotion to the elemental spirits. The darker man in the foreground is a mahotsukai (or 'servant of magic'), a monk who has come to the conclusion that true magic lies not in begging spirits to help you, but from within the very essence of life itself. They draw their power from their own life force and of those around them. This, of course, has led to be vilified. In many cases, this is justified as the mahotsukai becomes addicted to the power rushes and starts to seek greater and greater expenditures of his/her power (and hence, start to drain more and more of the life of the plants, animals, and people around).

This was simple sketch quickly drawn and inked in Painter 4, then colored in Photoshop 5 (don't remember why I switched programs). For those wishing to see the visual steps, click here.
