SciFi and Fantasy Art: Dragonbreakers' Dawn

The inspiration for this painting came from Alexiuss' deviantART journal entry "Hell on earth (Visual installment 01)" from April 19, 2008. Check out this collection of photographs of the shipbreakers in Bangladesh! It is both shocking and fascinating how these people live and work and break up gigantic ship wrecks lying on the beach to bring every piece of metal back to some use. These shipbreakers are recycling workers in the hardest and most visual way I can imagine. The idea for this painting grew slowly after having seen Alexiuss' visual installment and after having learned about a recycling-themed contest of the painters' club in DA. However, since I am most happy when I can paint fairies, unicorns, songgryphons, or dragons, I twisted the theme of the shipbreakers a bit. ;-)

The scene was of prehistoric men using a brush-fire to drive elephants into a swamp, and then butchering them. Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "The idea for this was definitely inspired by prehistoric hunters using the bones and the ivory of mammoths. However I don’t imaging those poeple having hunted and killed this dragon. It was a far to big and mighty specimen. I rather mixed the ideas of mammoth hunters and elephant graveyards ..."

Fear and torment along with sadness and pain tumbled up and forming hope and desire of survival, prosperity and future. i think i got it right, right?
