SciFi and Fantasy Art: The Shadowlords

The three Shadowlords of Ultima fame. Well, actually, it started out as Gandalf facing the Ringwraiths on Weathertop, but my inspiration mutated as I painted. But feel free to view it as either version. This is one of my older acrylic works, on 8.5x11 standard paper. I have gained a new appreciation for trying to do detail work with lousy brushes (there's a REASON why they're just silhouettes :P ). I tried several new techniques in this one : The old toothbrush-speckle trick (naturally I sprayed myself instead of the painting with it at first) and I also fingerpainted the clouds! :)

Again a wonderful picture! I guess I'll have to take a look at your whole gallery! ;-) <br>
BTW: Oh yes, the good old toothbrush-trick. It did its job very well on this night sky! I don't like the clouds so much... but maybe its just their arrangement not their actual look... don't know... they seem somehow too solid... But still the sky looks great!

Well, if it is a lavapit making the reflection then they must have just thrown somebody in and are relishing the victim's screams! EEEk!

Dude, this is a totaly sweet picture, but, well, um, it's Aragorn, not Gandalf that faces the Ring wraiths on Weathertop.

No, Gandalf gets to Weathertop before Aragorn and confronts the Nazgul and then leaves. He talks about it at the Council of Elrond, but we don't actually see it happen.

" 'I galloped to Weathertop like a gale, and I reached it before sundown on my second day from Bree - and they were there before me. They drew away from me, for they felt the coming of my anger and they dared not face it while the Sun was in the sky. But they closed round at night, and I was besieged on the hill-top, in the old ring of Amon Sul. I was hard put to it indeed: such light and flame cannot have been seen on Weathertop since the war-beacons of old.' "

Anyhow, it doesn't matter, since this isn't about the Lord of the Rings.

Nice picture, though I wish the Shadowlords were a more absolute shade of black. It would make them more menacing.

To be honest, I'm not crazy about the rest of the painting, but that starry sky is cool. And I LOVE the cloud on the right... I'd love to see more in that style!
