SciFi and Fantasy Art: Scotohereptans megaloflagellata

The vermoidean vascularozoans Scotohereptans megaloflagellata (center), Microscotoplanes nana (the small ones surrounding S. megaloflagellata), and Glossolithos chloropus. By accident, S. megaloflagellata is one of M. nana's greatest predators, as they inhabit the same ecosystem, and M. nana often gets underfoot of S. megaloflagellata, with fatal consequences.

Does he have spiny things like a porcupine on his back or is that just regular hair? Or something else entirely? I like the markings on his tentacle thingies.
