SciFi and Fantasy Art: Vampire Sphinx

The Vampire Sphinx is a mutant moth. It arises whenever a caterpillar feeds on plants watered with vampire's ichor.

As befitting its name, the Vampire Sphinx feeds primarily on blood, though it is not a fussy feeder. In fact, the bloodthirsty creature readily feeds on humans, livestock, vermin, and even visits flowers.

However, these flying horrors prize vampire ichor above all else. Many vampires spin apocryphal tales of how a vampire narrowly survived the predations of vampire-hunters, only to be devoured by the vampire sphinxes hiding inside his coffin.

10 Feb 2004	Chael Gunnell	Loading... Very interesting that you've created these interesting moths. I love moths, and think you did a lovely job. Did you know there ACTUALLY IS a species of moth called the Vampire-moth (Calyptra eustrigata) ? It lives in India/SE Asia and sucks peoples blood. I have some characters based off of it. That species is very rare, but does look similar to a sphinx moth. Stanton F. Fink replies: "I'm very aware of that delightful species... These guys are based off of it. I've just been unable to find a picture of the bugger."
