SciFi and Fantasy Art: Guardian

From The Horse and His Boy, fifth in The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis...

Shasta, having been left alone in unfamiliar territory, has a nice little pity-party with himself before noticing that he is accompanied by another presence - one who soon reveals Himself as the true author of Shasta's adventures.

Digital painting.

There seems to be an emphasis on the hand and the rein in this picture. (The face of Shasta is in shadows but the hand is lit up.) Is this symbolic (the theme of guidance), or am I just over-analyzing? 10 In any case, a very moving picture! 2

:-) Dawn D. Davidson replies: "Ummm. Overanalyzing. But hey, art speaks its own language to the viewer. 2 I actually was thinking in more practical terms, i.e. Aslan is the light source, and Shasta's hand is in a better position to reflect some of that cast light than his face."

Ugh! I hate not knowing what to say! Although in this case, I have quite a lot to say; maybe too much. 1
I LOVE the picture. Aslan is absolutely out of this world! You portrayed him as the strong character that he is, while the movie completely didn't. 10 He looks noble, yet he could be sad; he looks trustable, like someone you could run up when you are lost. Yet, he seems... too dignified to approach. JUST how I pictured him!!! *chortles in pleasure*
I did think it a little odd that there is almost no light on Shasta's face; I think there'd be at least a little, wouldn't there? Of course, YOU are the amazing, talented, inspiring artist, not me!
I like the blue backround behind Aslan. (In fact, I like everything about Aslan, distantly related as it is!) It looks like more than a sky. His eyes are amazingly deep for a profile view; I love it!!! (did I mention that? My memory seems to have failed me... 1 )I also like Aslan's chin. Don't ask me why; it just struck me as one awesome chin! Very worthy of Aslan. And besides that, I like your sun above your signature quite a lot. 1
Please realize: I am not crazy; I simply love the pic. I want to frame it or somethin!! I think it wins my 'favorite Dawn Davidson' award. Believe me though, it was hard to choose!!! You really should tell Douglas Gresham (sp) about your work. Thanks for drawing what SOME of us (heh heh....) could never draw. You do great work! Keep it up!!! ;D

:-) Dawn D. Davidson replies: "Thanks, Keeper. Your enthusiasm keeps me encouraged."

Very nice work! It really captures the feel of Shasta being alone with this huge, great, and beautiful presence that is Aslan. Wonderfully done!

I am thoroughly enjoying your gallery. Upon stumbling across this masterpiece, I must say that of all your pieces, this one best captures emotion. Aslan is so perfectly aslan! Noble, Strong -- and you caught that look of compassion I've always pictured in his eyes. I love how you have the light coming from Aslan so that Shasta, or should we say Prince Cor, is in shadow. This is one of my favorite moments in Narnia, and I'm glad someone has captured it with the beauty and emotion the way you have.

This is amazing! Probably my favorite in all of your gallery. Which is funny, since Horse and His Boy isn't really my favorite Narnia story. But this is just spellbinding. Love your entire gallery!

Niiiice...awesome juxtaposition of the two! And I love the way you phrased the description; it’s so true...

I love this! It’s one of my favourite scenes in the whole series, and you captured it beautifully! I like how all the light seems to be emanating from Aslan. In all, Aslan does look amazing in this picture!
