SciFi and Fantasy Art: King Griffin

King Vultures are my favorite birds. It was only fitting that I should use one as my model for a new Griffin pic. Not quite the same as the sketch I sent you Tralfy, but I hope you like him none the less:) I'm getting quite into these griffins now:) I dont think I'll ever prefer them to Dragons but then they are a nice change.

Did you know that king vultures have no sense of smell?

If I routinely stuck my head in the intestines of rotting corpses I'd have no sense of smell either2

Actually, other vultures, like turkey vultures, have very keen senses of smell (for birds, anyways). The king vulture lacks a sense of smell because it does not locate its food by smell, like other vultures. Instead, it loctes its food by looking for a group of other (usually turkey) vultures that has clustered around a corpse. Because the king vulture has a very strong beak, it opens the corpse for the other vultures, who have been waiting for the king vulture to arrive to do this particular task... And that's why we call them, "king" vultures... Because they eat first.

Quite interesting.

wow, king vultures are my favorite birds too! or, one of 'em, at least... they're so cool. although, yes, they have a much weaker sense of smell... but damnit, they're aesthetically pleasing, and isn't that enough? anyway, i like this. the customary King Vulture coloration adds a nice touch to the griffin's appearance. and the pose is rather cool, as well... i really like this. and moreso because it takes reference from a sadly neglected avian creature.

King Vultures have an extremely developed sense of smell. This is how they differ from other vultures. Most vultures, especially Old World Vultures, use sight to locate food, but the King Vulture does not, it uses smell. Also, other vultures do not wait for the King Vulture, but they do move out of the way when it comes to eat. I am not trying to be a know it all, but I just wanted to inform you. Anyway, you drew a really great picture. Keep it up.

Neat colors, especially the red-yellow gradient. It's an interesting mix of stylized and natural look, and I especially like the curve of the tail.

Looks cool...but, almost like a Toucan...oh well, I'd prefer this guy to be on my Froot Loops any day.
