SciFi and Fantasy Art: Clash

This is an acrylic painting I did for a contest for someone on another art website. It took me about 10 hours or so, and is actually about 11"x14" - one of the biggest, most detailed paintings I have ever done XD There is so much tiny detail in this, it drove me nuts. Especially on that grass... ugh.

The contest was on contrast. Some of the ideas I had in mind while painting this were

Age and Youth

Wisdom and Vanity

Truth and Lies

Life and Death

... but which is which?

There are other, more obvious differences as well, but I'm sure most people can pick up on those so I won't spell them all out ;) I'm pretty happy with this one. Though there are some flaws, overall I was pretty happy.

Wow. This is incredible. Where to begin??.... The artistry is great but my favorite thing is all the subtle differences in addition to the obvious ones... like the way the gray horse’s mane falls to the other side in contrast to the proud pose and flowing mane of the other... I definitely feel that that expresses wisdom vs vanity, I’m not sure why the mane on the other side shows wisdom but somehow it does.. I guess maybe it shows age and experience and realization of the dangers of vanity...? and I love how the gray clouds don’t stop but instead blend into nice fluffy white ones. And the deathly expression in the gray horse’s eyes is very expressive. Beautiful painting!

:-) A. Thomason replies: "Thank you! I’m glad you picked out those things ^^ This was fun to paint exactly because I had to do opposites, or at least differences, in each area. I didn’t want a harsh cut-off between the two, since so many opposite things have hard to distinguish boundaries - they can just kind of seem to blend together, and yet, there is a defining line between the two ^^"

You are so good at drawing horses. I think this piece should have gotten a mods choice. But who am I?

:-) A. Thomason replies: "Why thank you! 2 I hope someday to get a mod’s... that would be cool. Ah well, there will be other chances... 2"

I must say I love those horses/unicorns. Fantastic colours (some of my absolute fav. colours on horses), very good anatomy on them too. Nice overall feeling and shadings. The "line" between the halves is nice too. My only "objection" would be the part where the hills meet under the light part of the clouds. They are kinds misty and gray there whereas the rest of the land is very cleanly cut. But that’s the only think I think could have been much better, the rest is great! 2

:-) A. Thomason replies: "Ahh, interesting observation about the mountains... I didn’t really notice that before O.O I was trying to show a blending into the green, but the green turned to gray, and the gray looks like mist XD Thank you for your comment! 2"

Interesting visual representation of a play of a variety of concepts. I should try to return and give this one a closer look later. ~#E

:-) A. Thomason replies: "Hee hee.... there are quite a few things hidden in here that might not be so obvious at first - but that’s the fun of it ^^"

This is absolutely breathtaking! I love it. How big of a canvas did you work on?

:-) A. Thomason replies: "Thank you! I used a piece of paper (ack, I always start with paper and then kick myself afterwards for not using something more durable, and yet I do it over and over XD), I think it’s around 14 by 11 inches."

The little flower that separates them seems to be clinging to life in both dimensions.12

:-) A. Thomason replies: "Ha ha, yeah, you’re right. Most of the opposites in the painting just came together, but that flower was the one thing I had to have from the beginning ^^"
