SciFi and Fantasy Art: Beauty and the Beast

I've been prolific lately...well, unemployment'll do that to you. (Anybody need a staff artist, cheap?) After all that realism, I wanted something more intricately Art Nouveau...refreshing. 'Beauty and the Beast' is actually probably my least favorite fairy tale, for two main reasons--both related to the fact that he turns into a prince at the end. How lame is that? Handsome princes are a dime a dozen. A Beast, now--that has STYLE. (To be fair, Robin Mckinley did a great book 'Rose Daughter' where he stays a Beast.) Secondly, does anyone else find it just a little sketchy to tell young girls that the horrible monster you're living with will turn into a charming prince once you get married? Archetypes, archetypes...anyway. I had so much fun with the background on this one, I think I'll do another one. With irises, maybe.

I must say that i really love this one. Even though her legs are a little bit short, the picture is still very captivating. Its just lovely, so keep up the good work.

Stupid john egdell goes on about "reading the book" and doesn't even bother to read the title or the artist's comment on the picture and so sounds like an idiot and makes a complete fool of himself. *smacks him over the head* come now, bookworm, you're giving the rest of us bad names.

Ah, well, enough of that rant. I like this piccy. Always loved beauty and the beast, although i haven't come across as many good remakes of it as i have cinderella. Mayhaps i should read mckinley's version...

Actually, I found the Beauty and the Beast story to be quite different. Not that your take isn't good either and makes sense. I guess, since I have found it myself, I truly believe in true love. I'm not saying, "Oh go out and try to change your man and maybe he'll be good." Or "Take abuse, a guy will change." No. I'm saying I believe in the power of love. I think the beast being a Beast, is not so much an outward thing as an inward. And Beauty loves Beast as he is, no strings without trying to change him. Granted, it's a bit scary at first, but throught it all she really sees that he is a very good person on the inside. So the love changes him. Suddenly, he is no longer a beast, but a human, whom she can love in all aspects. I guess it doesn't really matter if he's a prince or not, but that he is changed by her love. The beauty of her love changes him from a monster into a human. True love. Not abusive crap or controlling change. Does this make sense?

Thank you!!! I’m not the only one who hates the ending of B&B! (need to show this to a few female somebodies before they try to marry their latest mistakes...)

Love the Beast btw -- not the typical "horrible monstrous beast!" Quite handsome in a beastly sort of way.

Love the picture! I love the fact that the beast is a lion. I have always loved lions, and I think that if I had to marry a beast, I would choose the King of Beasts. So much more appealing than portraying him to be a horrid monster-like creature. It is funny that you don’t like the story, most girls think Beauty is better than Sleeping Beauty or Rapunzel because she is more active than they are. However, my mom doesn’t care for it, and I actually think Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel and Cinderella are much better stories. I have to say though I don’t think anybody should have Beast be mean to Beauty, because the whole point is that he looks ugly, but he is really beautiful inside. If he’s a beast on the inside and outside, why would she want anything to do with him?

You know it probably depends on which version of Beauty & the Beast you read. Some versions are probably better than others.
