SciFi and Fantasy Art: Kirin Amber

Unlike their saccharine European cousins, the Asian kirin (or kierun, or ky-lin) is wise, wily, and has no prurient interest in the sex lives of young women, except insofar as they're involved. A number of women, most notably Confucious's mother, were believed to have kirin lovers, proving that the old cliche virginity is not an interest of the Asian unicorn. They are instead dedicated to justice, and were known to show up in courts to denounce the guilty (though not, of course, within living memory.) Anyway, I just wanted to paint grass and trees, and since the beknighted grass-tree-deerlike mammal genre has been painted by every wildlife painter on the face of the earth, I went for something a little exotic, based on a horse, a deer, and some tattooing from Borneo. Black and yellow is the most eye-catching combination to the human brain, but I tossed in a little purple so the kirin would stand out. I don't think I need to paint grass again for a few centuries.

I am consistently blown away by your work! The way you handle the grass here is just incredible, I also love the way you depict light, very convincing! When you bring this level of realism to fantasy art it becomes very believable. This image looks like a national geographic article on black unicorns...love it!

Somehow this little fellow reminds me of the dik dik, a small deer living in Afrika...
