SciFi and Fantasy Art: Tribal TapirLike most fantasy artists, I know in my heart of hearts that 99% of the women in fantasy are built like maybe 5% of the women in reality, and without embarking on a rant about how unhealthy media sterotypes are, I'll just say that nagging in back of my mind is the belief that by conforming my art to the various six feet tall, 110lb, gravity-defying DD rack Barbie women of fantasy, I am Part Of The Problem. Sure, I know all the excuses...'There are women who really look like that.' 'That's what people want.' 'It's fantasy.' And I know better, although my excuses are, at least, the fairly honest ones of 'That's what they pay me for,' and 'Because I'm shallow, okay?' So in the interests of soothing my nagging conscience, I set out to paint someone who was chunky but still kinda charming. And who better than...well...a tapir? You can't draw a slim tapir. Nature has designed the tapir to be a hefty beast. But I think she carries it pretty well. For a tapir. And she was fun to paint, which is the important thing. |

| 26 Oct 2005 | Anonymous | I've gone through your whole gallery almost, I've laughed and sighed forlornly at "Crucifixion City" but I just had to comment on this one. Despite not being the stereotype she's gorgeous. She has that come hither look on her face and she is naturally gorgeous, small waist nice butt and breasts, as long as it's all in proportion and beautifully rendered who needs it to be the stereotype? Kudos on striking down the stereotype! | |
| 7 Dec 2005 | Cassandra M. Thompson | Shes pretty..Lol and naural...Not many of these seen in the 'woods.. | |
| 16 Dec 2005 | Morgan | Haha, very cute. Love it. | |
| 22 Dec 2005 | Anonymous | I love it, it's cute and just feels good, but, the head isn't anything like that of a tapir (a pig-like creature with a short but trunk-like snout); it has the head of an Okapi (a forest relative of giraffes). The body's right though. Ursula Vernon replies: "Actually, it's the head of a Brazilian tapir. They don't have the snouts that Malaysian tapirs do, and they're an all over grey-brown instead of the white-rump. " | |
| 30 Dec 2005 | Anonymous II | Perhaps you're thinking of another animal. I'm quite familiar with tapirs themselves, and the Brazilian variety has quite a distinct trunk http://www.iwokrama.org/forest/images/tapir3.jpg My comparison to an okapi was a bit hasty, but the resmblance is there. | |
| 1 Aug 2006 | Jenny | while some might say, "naked doens't have to be erotic, it can simply be artistic," I protest: can't a body that ISN'T 6 ft tall and 110 pounds, with ribs grotestically and anexorically poking out, STILL be erotic? this female body is what I would call "normal", and healthy. when will people learn? | |
| 29 Nov 2006 | Soon_to_be_famous_author | Im still in my awkward adolescents stage so this pic still disturbs me 0.0 | |
| 26 May 2008 | Velyna Vixen | I think she’s gorgeous... She looks innocent, yet with a come hither look that is irresistible. | |
| 2 Jun 2008 | Anon. | Frankly I thiknk she’s beautiful, I like seeing anthro’s that aren’t just a scantily clad woman with ears and tail. | |
