SciFi and Fantasy Art: Fight

Hm. Old picture again. I think the poor gryphon already has lost the fight. I made the pic while I was very, very bored while working. It is from 1991 and I don't work anymore in this firm, so what would it matter if they knew... :-)

Hey just thought I'd say that aside from the gorgeous unicorn and gryphon...those tress in the background are really excellent and I think they make the whole picture look just that little more magical! ^.~ Good job!

:-) Uta ´Freawyn´ Hesse replies: "Hehe... thank you. The trees in the background, thats fact, made more work then the Unicorn and the gryphon, because they are pure ink on white paper..."

I'm not much into doing message boards, but I have to say, I truly love this picture. The unicorn is a bit reminiscent of the unicorns in medieval/renaissance art...which I really LOVE. I also love how they are in mid-action, it makes your mind want to follow through with the motion. Though gruesome(in a good way), it is VERY BEAUTIFUL.
As for the uneducated stiffs at the top of this message board, they may not have to like your art, but they at least could have expressed it maturely.
I am so excited to have stumbled upon your site. Thanks! You've given me much inspiration.

1 Uta ´Freawyn´ Hesse replies: "Oh wow... thank you...*blushes*. Thats great compliments fo me, you know. Yes, the unicorn may look a bit medieval. Its what I exactly like on faboulos beasts as well. Well, it was a long time ago when I made the picture... so the gryphon isn`t as I would do him today, but the whole composition I thought would be nice enough to show it in my gallery. Getting such compliments or comment I never would have suspected."

I can't believe I haven't commented on this one before! It was one of the first pics I viewed here at Elfwood. Well, I do wish you would do a new and colored version. Or, a follow-up, for what happens next. Of course, I always say that,, I just want to know what happens next! See yah, Uta! This is a really great pic.

:-) Uta ´Freawyn´ Hesse replies: "Thank you very much!!! No, I am sure I will not do a remake of this one. It was good as it was, and it was concepted for ink, so I think a coloured version wouldn't fit, perhaps. It is one of my classical ones. Lateley I came back to make black and white pictures again, but mostly they are motives that I never did before. A what-happened-next picture? Hm... well, you have enough fantasy to see whatever will happen next, so this one will be the only one in the "series" of 1."

NOO! *runs in to save gryphon* Disembowlment doesn't always kill the victim, does it?!

Anyway, it's a good- if horribly sad, you gryphon-murderer- picture- the detail is fantastic and the image very clear. Good emotion- the anger is very well done. Good background, as well- the black helps to bring out the foreground. *magically heals gryphon and walks away*

12 Uta ´Freawyn´ Hesse replies: "I am not a gryphon-murderer. I am a gryphon, you know! But thank you for your comment. I am glad that someboday matters so much with the gryphon. Thank you for the healing! This might explain why perhaps later the gryphon flew around and told his friends and his family about a "mysterious person" who saved his life!"

thats good. I would be sorry for the griffin, but because im so horse obsessed and i want the unicorn to win, ill just not worry about his cut. Ouch.

GREAT JOB!!! i cant draw like that 2

12 Uta ´Freawyn´ Hesse replies: "Well. At the picture it looks as if the unicorn would win. But I never wrote a story about it, so possibly nobody was killed - or both. Who knows. So you can end the battle in your fantasy whichever you like, of course! Thank you very much."

Awesome. Poor gryphon, that must have hurt while drawing, as much as you love gryphons! I like the style of this picture, it looks like an old book-illustration!

:-) Uta ´Freawyn´ Hesse replies: "Thank you very much, really! Well, at the time I have drawn this picture I even didn't thought of the GuP stories, it was muich earlier. I wanted the gryphon to be hurt by the unicorn, but not deadly injured, but somehow I couldn't help it came out like that... but nevertheless I am somehow still lucky with the result, knowing that at least the unicorn came out absoluteley as I wanted it!!"

Hi Uta! I remember seeing this picture before but being too lazy to comment. Now I give myself a kick in the ... and finally say something about it: It's marvelous! It looks like a medieval wood-cutting, and the style of the animals has this touch of heraldic transformation. I like it very much. Like Aryana said: It makes me think of old book illustrations as well. 2 Don't you ever say again you don't like the way your gryphons come out! (Though I know the phenomenon far too well, that the own art always looks not as good as all the stuff others produce...) ;-)

1 Uta ´Freawyn´ Hesse replies: "*g* Thaaank you very much, its a big compliment from you. This picture is one of my oldest fantasy pictures, and its "just" black ink. I agree the unicorn and gryph looking very heraldic, I think my beasts do still in a way. This is my worst gryphon, though, I think... it is much too thin and also back then I had the idea that front and back claws are the ones of an eagle... the unicorn, though, is still one of the best I ever did..."

You can do it uni, bite his frickin' head off!!!!!!!!

:-) Uta ´Freawyn´ Hesse replies: "Hehe.. seems that you don't like gryphons, huh? But since you are cheshire kitten, your father (mother) the cheshire cat can tell you enough about both creatures *g* I love both creatures, on this picture I like the unicorn more because it came out better, but usually I love gryphs more. And the first gryphon I ever loved was the one from Alice in Wonderland!"

I love the detail in the wings and the background. lot of times people ignore the backgrounds and just focus on the main part of the picture. I think it adds a lot to the picture when there's an interesting background. I also like the way you got away from the "pure and innocent" stereotype that unicorns often have. Good job!
