| 8 Aug 2004 | Laura | I must say your work is excellent. I’ve only been drawing about a year or so I’m not even close to your terrific drawing skills. Any tips for a beginner? Marius Vibe replies: "Thanks a lot! Well, it’s hard for me to give any tips - I’ve been doing this for as long as I can remember, so it’s like explaining how I eat. However, I do have a couple of things I must stress. First of all, OBSERVE. Make everything and everyone you see around you every day become a source of inspiration and learning. It’s all out there, so use it. Second: Get BOOKS. Comics, anatomy books, everything that can add something to your own artwork. Don’t copy anyone’s style - that’s for losers and xerox machines - but use their experiences and skills to make your own artwork better. Third: Be BOLD. 99% of all beginners are so unsure of themselves that they wield their pencil like it’s gonna break. That makes everything look flat and boring. Make contrasts in your work. Black areas and white areas, light and shadow. Composition is the hardest thing you can learn, so you better start at once. And finally... PRACTICE. Don’t let any ideas get away - draw, draw, draw, draw... and you’ll be just fine." | |
