I think you probably don't like the end result because of a simple "mistake" artists often make when not used to using all that much colour, which is, treating the colour as "solid". To achieve realistic skintones, hair colour, etc, one must use different tones (which I can see you've delicately tried here, but the overall effet still remains a little "flat"). One thing I try to do, is to look at EVERYTHING around me and try to see the different colours the shadows and highlights are made of. Try that, to really /see/...you'll be awestruck. Just looking at something really simple the other day (at the red enamel-coloured door of a commuter train, of all things), gave me an idea for a picture that I'm currently working on. The red had very distnct higlights of duck-egg blue where the sunlight was reflecting off it. It was relly obvious once you knew how to look  | |
