| 17 Nov 2006 | Future billionaire | I think the reason that these kinds of feelings and ideas are portrayed as women is because it is far more likely to believe it. YOu are a wonderful artist and you have astounded me with your breathtaking skill, but I just don't think that the words Faith and Truth can be so believed if portrayed by men. I'm sorry to say that but I take a look at this world today and it's past and that is what I get out of it. But then again Fantasy is fantasy, and an artist can do what they please! Anyway that's just my opinion. However usually when a woman is portrayed she is delicate and frail looking (at least in my experience) I would like to see a stronger woman who can convey the most honorable human ideals and characteristics. One doesn't necessarily have to portray strength using muscles or an angry face either, or even a weapon for that matter. It seems that you can do anything with your skill, and I envy you so. Your artwork is absolutely beautiful, and you certainly deserve all the Mod's Choices that you have been awarded. Please forgive my negativity, it is not meant to criticize your work. Besides, this man is very well executed, and has an extrememly beautiful face. I would take a second look at him Good luck to you and may you prosper forever Maria J. William replies: "No worries! I appreciate the in-depth comment, and your comments on my work. You're too kind. I believe what you see as negativity is just a difference of opinion. Which is fine. I would like to disagree with your statement that women are mostly shown as frail in art - it may have been true a hundred years ago, but not today. If you check out the work of artists like Vallejo or Brom you'll see that this isn't the case. While it's nice to look at aesthetically, such strength doesn't really interest me as an artist. You're right when you say strength can be shown in ways other than muscles and scowls. I'm trying my best to do just that, but I also like variety. I believe that women are capable of just as much evil as men, if not worse. In turn men, too, can be delicate, subtle and beautiful. I actually value those qualities in both men and women, visually at the least. It's what I try to portray most of the time." | |
| 5 Sep 2007 | David "Sorrow" Auer | Men can be horrible, but one should not be blind to our virtues. I am not advocating blind faith. The world is not so stark as f.b. suggests. As with the variety in and variation of shadings in a William portrait, there is variety and variation in the human soul (even *gasp* in men). I am not advocating a blind faith in man, but a faith in the ability of individuals to exceed expectations and rise above circumstances. The eye pierces and the hair luminesces. Maria always makes such lovely knots. I am reminded by this piece not to forget the beauty of man, despite the wicked world we live in. | |

| 10 Nov 2007 | Allie (vistor) | Maria- I love the shading of the "Trinity" especially this one. All done masterfully well. Again, as stated once before, it is nice to see someone taking a 'fresh' approach and throwing out traditional views! | |
