This is a more recent piece, inspired by legends surrounding the klaboutermannikin, a fey being of German and Dutch folklore who inhabits ship figureheads and protects those on board.  In the event that a ship with a klaboutermannikin does go down, the klaboutermannikin goes down into the sea with the drowned to aid their souls in reaching their proper afterlife.  It was believed that if one sank in a ship without a klaboutermannikin, one's soul would be condemned to the waters for eternity.  Therefore, figureheads carved for Dutch and German ships were crafted with great care from wood carefully chosen to attract these spirits.

This piece represents a breakthrough in my inking style, resulting from ideas about inking in the wake of reading Bernie Wrightson's illustrated version of Frankenstein (highly recommended!).  It is one of my favorite works to date.
