SciFi and Fantasy Art: Even Guardians Must SleepBut you should still be careful! This is my first real atempt at a inked piece that stands on its own without digital coloring or any such thing, and with a full background. I'm rather pleased with the result. I especially tried to pay attention to her musculature, and to intigrate the forground with the background aesthetically. I've really gotten into Exalted lately, which is where this comes from. She's a Night Cast, a'course. I'm really enamoured with her sword, too. It seems like such a good idea...a little hook on the end, so you can lift things but still have a weapon in hand should events go awry. This one was done with two different types of Micron pens- .01 and .005. |

You must join the monochrome sisterhood, then. I can't see the whole piece up close, of course, but it looks like you've got an awfully grey scan, or are perhaps using the pens a little timidly? I would have initially mistaken this for pencil. Also, I think her nose is a little flat/2d looking. Other than those niggle, no criticism, much spiffy! Jennifer R. Meyer replies: "Arr. No, it actually scanned just fine. I just used the pens timidly, as you say. The background, 'specially, since I was using a .005 micron pen that was A. almost out of ink and B. kinda broken so the line was even thinner. ;} Shading with pens is definately something I need to work on. I tried to avoid it with this piece, but I should start playing around with it."
| 1 Aug 2003 | Kchan <kchanzombie@yah...com> | ::drools:: Is there a color version of this? ==----- Jennifer R. Meyer replies: "Unfortunately not. I was trying my hand at a stand alone ink drawing. I guess I could go into photoshop and color it, but that'd only happen if I had a large quantity of time on my hands." | |
| 7 Nov 2003 | AM | I love the way the vines are growing over the serpent...like it's been there for ages. Is it waking up, or does it sleep like that? Jennifer R. Meyer replies: "It's hard to tell, but its eye is beginning to open. Or maybe it's covertly watching her?" | |
| 3 Feb 2004 | Toni J. Kaukinen | ...and here I was going to say something about Exalted. Arr!
Poor Solar, is what I have to say about the Guardian. Waking up, is it?
As for your technique, still getting better and better, it seems - rounder, more natural shapes instead of your earlier straight and jagged limbs. Gosh. There's loads more detail as well, and it certainly doesn't look awkward or "2d" as some artists' handiwork does.
| 20 Feb 2004 | Lord Biohazard | BAH!!! I tell you Dragons should NOT be killed!, nor feared save by our own doing!! | |

| 21 Feb 2004 | Guillermo 'Gwydionn' García | Wow... great pic! I just love your swords. | |
| 3 Oct 2004 | Jenna 'Laughing Astarael' Kass | I love the details here... I'm such a coward, hardly daring to stray from my beloved mechanical pencils --; That sword is awesome, by the way. Though, with me, anything vauely sword-ish is something I want. Heh... | |
| 28 Oct 2006 | Emily R. Lacy-Nichols | Stunning attention to detail. The fact that the background doesn't make the foreground washed out or hard to distinguish speaks to your skill with pens (I love microns myself ). Her expression is wonderful, and she herself looks real: well-proportioned and not in any impossible or contorted positions. Does she sleep hung up on the rope?? (looks a tad uncomfortable). Beautiful picture! | |
