SciFi and Fantasy Art: Castle by the Sea

Media: Acrylic on Shell

Earlier this year, after painting of glass bottles, I moved to shells. This one is an interesting canvas -- an odd shape to work with (for me at least) with a slightly inward curve and ridges.

Did you undercoat with something? I see that the sky has found the ridges in the shell giving a rather pleasing effect.

:-) Jessica Ng replies: "No, I didn't (and I'm wondering if I should have). Pre-work preparation was something that only occurred to me after.
Maybe I should put a layer of varnish over it though, but I haven't done much work like this and am unsure about spending money for a bottle of varnish just for this (so far, I've just been careful with it). By the by, I strolled over to your gallery and I will definitely be back (I want to say "definitely" and hope to return to it soon so that the scatterbrain that I am doesn't forget) to take a closer look at some of your work -- even just by the thumbnails the weaponry especially looks interesting and a few others caught my eye. Thank you for the comment, I'm glad that you liked the effect, and I apologize for the rather late response ^^;"

That really is kool maybe if u tried hairspray or sumthing instead of spending money on varnish i dont know just a thought but it is awsome so deffinatly do something to preserve it 2 luv the presentation to

:-) Jessica Ng replies: "Hmm, hadn't even thought or considered that. The hairspray trick is a common "inexpensive tip" that I'd only used maybe twice but am not likely to do again on paper - one was on a piece that I gave away; another I'm not sure where I placed. Am not sure, but between those two pieces and now, I've been told hairspray may damage a drawing; I haven't any idea how it might affect acrylic on shell ^^; Might look into and see what I can find out about that though if I can but I'll probably test hairspraying a different shell with a different painting or just an acrylic doodle first even if I do decide to chance it.
