---------> * A Light in the Darkness: Elfwood Christmas art contest
It would be hard to imagine there not being a Christmas- themed art contest this time of year, so we decided to run one in parallel with the writing contest. The challenge for this contest is to create a Christmas-themed image that best captures the spirit of the season: the coming of an unconquerable light which can be glimpsed both in the dance of the stars and a warm smile of a friend, in exchange of gifts, in a warm fireplace and plenitude of the feast during the darkest days of the year, all part of the vision that winter and all the death that we see in nature, will not last forever.

Competition closes on 31 December 2009 [last entries must be handed in before 00:00 [GMT] 1 Jan 2010].

---------> * Another 9: A new contest!
Elfwood has been given the opportunity to potentially have some of our work reviewed by academy award nominated director Shake Acker, as part of the release of his latest film, 9.

The challenge is to create your very own sapient rag doll, in keeping with the aesthetic of 9 and the other characters.

Produced by Tim Burton, starring Elijah Wood and Jennifer Connelly amongst others, it's the story of when a small rag doll 9 (voice by Elijah Wood) first comes to life. 9 finds himself in a post-apocalyptic world where all humans are gone, and it is only by chance that he discovers a small community of others like him taking refuge from fearsome machines that roam the landscape intent on doing them harm. Scheduled for release in the UK on the 28th October.

Competition closes on 24 October 2009

---------> * Elfwood Art Contest: 'Tricks and Treats: A Halloween Contest'
Every year we see lots of Halloween-themed art submitted to Elfwood around the end of October and it seems a good idea to run a small art contest for Halloween. So this is the challenge: submit a picture that best captures either the day's traditional roots or the more modern interpretation of the holiday.
Competition requirements.
  • You have to be a publishing artist in Elfwood.
  • The artist and artwork has to comply with existing Elfwood rules and be published in the artist's gallery before the contest ends.
  • Only one (1) entry per participant.
  • The entry has to fall within the the contest theme, pictures not related to the announced theme will not be considered.
  • The submitted image should have been created recently - not over a year ago; images created specifically for the contest will be given particular consideration.

  • Other information.
  • Competition closes on 1 November 2009.
  • Work will be judged by a panel of Elfwood staff and prominent EW published members on the basis of originality as well as technical skill.
  • Feel free to use any visual medium.
  • Prizes will be awarded to the winner and a few other people. Aside from the top prize, the exact number and nature of prizes will remain undisclosed - possibly until the end of the contest (that's the tricky bit), roumor has it that more than the 3 top people will end up with a treat of some sort.

    ---------> * Wanted: moderators!
    We are in need of more moderators, since Elfwood is in constant growth.

    We're currently looking for moderators for all the areas.

    Requirements:

  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • You must have a published account, preferably been published for a few months.
  • You must have a good record, meaning no major rejections in the past year, for example for copying or repeated rejections.
  • You must be willing to give at least 1-2 hours a week to moderating.
  • You must have a good understanding of the rules.

  • If you have the requirements, then please proceed in reading the rest and volunteer.

    You're welcome to volunteer for more than 1 area. We will put up a note when we have enough volunteers, and all that have volunteered will hear back from us, but it might take a little while, so please be patient.

    For FanQuarter: We prefer volunteers that are familiar with a number of anime and/or American comics. We are currently looking for volunteers who know their American comics like Marvel and others, but we also need people who know their Dragon Ball, Inuyasha, Yu-Gi-Oh, Fushigi Yuugi, Kenshin, Yu Yu Hakusho, Naruto, Gundam, Hellsing, Sailor Moon and others.

    To contact us please go to the Contact page and choose "Volunteering" from the drop-down box and make sure you put which area or areas you are volunteering for in the subject line, like "FanQuarter mod", "Wyverns mod" or "SF&F mod". If you want to volunteer for more than 1 area, just list them both like "FanQuarter and SF&F mod".   [-->Discuss Here!]
