 History...
Spring 2010:

The Challenge: Write a Fantasy or a SciFi themed love poem.
There doesn't seem to be a more appropriate time to run Elfwood's first poetry contest than St. Valentine's day, with love being a major driving force behind poetry on this and probably every other world. The poem should not be shorter than two 4-lined stanzas (approx 50-100 words) and not more than 700 words in total length.

Create a sci-fi image focusing on the theme of the strength of the bond of love that sentient beings can have one for another.
The work would be judged on originality and evocative qualities as well as technical skill and the ability to weave together the concepts present in science fiction with the theme of love - be it friendship, romantic or family love.
The contest was born of the popular demand for giving a boost to sci-fi art on Elfwood and the desire to give this contest a seasonal and challenging aspect.

It would be hard to imagine there not being a Christmas- themed art contest this time of year, so we decided to run one in parallel with the writing contest. The challenge for this contest is to create a Christmas-themed image that best captures the spirit of the season: the coming of an unconquerable light which can be glimpsed both in the dance of the stars and a warm smile of a friend, in exchange of gifts, in a warm fireplace and plenitude of the feast during the darkest days of the year, all part of the vision that winter and all the death that we see in nature, will not last forever. Competition closes on 31 December 2009
