between the lines - prizes...

With contests set to become a constant feature on Elfwood we decided it was time to run a contest for writers in Elfwood.
The contest challenge is as follows: Write a short fantasy/sci-fi story based on a real published piece of news that you have come across in the media. The news has no be not older than around a month old.

Competition closes on 31 December 2009 [last entries must be handed in before 00:00 [GMT] 1 Jan 2010].

The Prizes:
  • 1st prize: The Creative Writing Coursebook: Forty Authors Share Advice and Exercises for Fiction and Poetry
  • 2nd prize: Calligraphy Set
  • 3rd prize: Eragon by Christopher Paolini

  • The above prizes will be supplemented with the granting of a Patron status (1 year/6 months/3 months) if you already are a Patron, your term can either be extended or you can give it as a 'gift' to someone else you like on Elfwood.

    Competition requirements.

  • You have to be a publishing writer in Elfwood.

  • The writer and story has to comply with existing Elfwood rules and be published in the writer's gallery before the contest ends. You may post links to unpublished items, but bear in mind that if the moderator has to reject it for any reason it will have to be disqualified from the contest. For this reason it is always best to publish links to stories that have already been approved by the moderators.

  • Only one (1) entry per participant.

  • The piece has to follow the contest theme: i.e. be based on a real piece on news that is not older than 1 October 2009. You can only base your story on one news story, not several.

  • The news story has to be in English.

  • You will have to provide the link to the piece of news together with the story [if you did not find it online or if it is no longer online, you may have to email a scan of the newspaper or a computer screen-captures image of it to the contest organisers].

  • Other information.

  • Competition closes on 31 December 2009 [last entries must be handed in before 00:00 [GMT] 1 Jan 2010].

  • Work will be judged by a panel of Elfwood staff and prominent published members based on originality, style and, most importantly, how well your story ‘explains’ or ties in with the news item that you picked.

You are free to pick any news story as long as its contents are not offensive or inflammatory in any manner. Contest organisers will leave it at their discretion whether or not the source material is acceptable and if you have any doubts about your piece feel free to contact (Mithrandir, Monica or Support) to check if it's ok and prevent you from being unable to enter the contest.

  • Prizes will be awarded to the winner and the 2 runners up.

  • To ENTER the contest: Go to the Competition forum section at the Twilight Tavern and make a post in the topic “Between the lines”: An Elfwood writing contest with a LINK to the news piece and the story published on your library shelf.

  • If you have any questions about this contest feel free to contact Mithrandir, Monica or Support.

  • The winners will be decided after 01.01.2010 in the space of 1 to 3 weeks depending on the volume of submissions we get.

(Please note that some of the above details may be amended if such necessity arises)
