Discuss Elfwood News Entry: Uploads open again

By :-) Thomas at Sun May 3 13:03:07 2009

After some weeks of intense programming, I am proud to announce that uploads are now open again to the public.

So - What's new?

Well, first off, the entire "base" system has been replaced with a new modern approach. This doesn't tell you much I assume, but doing this big step opens up for new features and functions later on; and makes Elfwood much more dynamic and easier to maintain for me.

As for functions for you members, the new Upload feature has:
- Easier to use user interface (I hope!)
- Support for more image formats.
- Automatic rescaling of too big stuff.
- No more "extranet" - meaning all uploads are done on the main site.
- No more "tickets" - see below.
- Easier handling of your material directly on your page - what you see is what you get.

So, what's with the tickets? For those of you who have no idea what an Elfwood Ticket is...err, was, it was a way to organize and queue the updates at Elfwood. You had to press a button to get updates done, you got a ticket number, and the moderators looked it all through.

In the new system, this will be more automatic, and in the background. Once you've uploaded whatever you want to go on the main site, moderators will eventually look it through. This may take some days (expect some more now after this long downtime of the upload function).

A replacement for the ticket/moderation process is STILL under development so anything you upload NOW will sit on your account for a while before we can process it.

My goal with all this is to make Elfwood easier, funnier and a more enjoyable experience for visitors and members alike. Please, I know, there might still be a lot of problems/bugs around, feel free to report them to us and we will fix them as soon as its possible.

I’m glad the ticket system is being replaced, but I assume the part you are working on will include a systematic way for moderators to go through uploaded material, so someone doesn’t get accidentally overlooked for months and months?

Hi----I love the new look and feel of Elfwood.......I have one concern though; I uploaded a few new pics and noticed the automatic size reduction, which is fine, but then I looked at them and the quality seemed very low......as a test I uploaded some old pics already in my gallery and did a side by side comparison--(the exact same files), and they looked really bad compared to the old Elfwood upload----------maybe once they’ve been officially "published" the quality will improve?---------also I think it’s a mistake not to offer an optional larger view of pics.........I like having the small pic, and then the option to enlarge, and examine detail.............it’s only my opinion.............sorry to complain, I love elfwood, and appreciate the work you put into it............thanks

:-) Thomas F Abrahamsson replies: "Don’t worry, these are temporary resized images. Better quality ones appear once the material goes live to the general public"

Same here as Kelsey and Sarah, on multiple browsers. This comment appears: ´We’re sorry, this type of file (text/html) is not allowed in the Wyvern’s library section of Elfwood.com, to which this user account (akronos) belongs to.´
So what kind of file does belong in an online library then?
I do like the rest of the upgrade, looking good!

:-) Thomas F Abrahamsson replies: "Hehe, sounds like a bug to me - thanks for tellin’"

I’m not sure where to put this, but when I try to edit my personal dtails, it tells me to click the little save button that appears, but I look and I cannot find 8

:-) Thomas F Abrahamsson replies: "See if you could run a more modern web browser, it would solve your problems. Which one are you using now?"

Its been about a week, and no mods have checked my stuff yet 8
I just joined recently and am glad the tickets are gone but I don’t like the fact that I have to wait until mods publish my work.

:-) Thomas F Abrahamsson replies: "We haven’t started checking material yet."

I logged in, and the Extranet says that The Extranet is no more?!?!? I get the feeling I might miss the tickets, that way I could look and see where I was at in the que, but I’ll have to try the system before I have any final thoughts. *squinting to read the tiny font* And gosh, thirteen years of Elfwood? I have been here since 1999, ten years.

I probably haven’t looked hard enough yet, but will we be able to upload illustrations again? u know, fer storyz...

:-) Thomas F Abrahamsson replies: "You can upload them along your stories. there’s no special upload page for them."

Love the new system, being a patron, new stuff gets published pretty quickly; within a day usually. Question, will the ’view full size’ tab be put back on at all.

:-) Thomas F Abrahamsson replies: "There’s is a full view option. What you do is click at the bottom of a picture you want to see in full view and then it will open up the full version."
