Discuss Elfwood News Entry: Elfwood Rules Simplified and Revised

By :-) Thomas at Mon May 11 10:43:57 2009

I am very happy and proud to announce that the Elfwood rules has been revised in an effort to make them simpler, much more open and easier to understand.

In response to feedback and criticism from our members, me and a selected team of experienced Elfwood moderators formed a task team to cut down, simplify and revise our rules. The work has been going on for a couple of weeks now, and I would like to take the time to thank everyone involved, and especially Monica!

Many of our rules were written in the old and dark ages, and were relevant and meaningful back then. However, as time goes by, we realized that a lot of them were unnecessary or just made life harder for our members. The new rules have been cut down to a minimum, and are much more open and allowing.

The new rules are in effect from today, May 11th. They have replaced the old ones, and can be found under the "Rules" drop down menu at Elfwood.

An important aspect of the new rules set is the introduction of an "Other Works" tab for Elfwood user accounts. Under that tab, everything that isn't within genre for the area will be placed by the moderators. This could include anything from pictures of your dog, to too-low-quality stuff. In practice, this means that the moderators will only reject extreme violence, porn and stolen/illegal material - everything can end up under the "other works" tab if it is out of genre.

The moderation process will also be changed, as the tickets are gone. The old ticket system will be replaced by a new moderation queue, where all uploaded material ends up automatically without the need of manually submitting any tickets. This means that if you upload something new, all you need to do is to fix the "issues" with the items you've uploaded (i.e. writing descriptions and classifying the work into categories), and after that you just need to wait for a moderator to look at your material.

Interesting. I guess this means I can finally upload that one story I wrote that wasn’t in-genre.

:-) Thomas F Abrahamsson replies: "Yes, you can upload that through your Wyverns Library account and then just choose that it goes to the Other Works tab. //Monica - Elfwood Head Moderator and Forest Manager"

yea nice changes everywhere!
but how will i know how long i will have to wait until publishment? It would be nice to have some kind of timer. I could also be in words like: "Today the queue is 7 orkish miles long". 1
Maybe a graph like thingie that shows the mass of uploads per day. I would love to design a steampunky graph for elfwood!

greetings from switzerland

:-) Thomas F Abrahamsson replies: "Currently we’re lacking behind on the queue, because we opened up for users to upload materials on May 3, but the moderating tools weren’t ready to reopen before May 13. //Monica - Elfwood Head Moderator and Forest Manager"

Does this mean that articles will be accepted under the ‘Other Works’ or were they already acceptable (on genre)?

:-) Thomas F Abrahamsson replies: "If it is a Wyvern’s account (for written material) we will allow just about anything under the ’Other Works’ tab."

um - is the Other Works tab a holding-area, where the art goes but is not published onto elfwood for everyone to see, or are the pics actually published for public viewing? It’s just that i have loads of stuff that i could put into this section, and just wondered what would hapen to the pics! 1

:-) Thomas F Abrahamsson replies: "Everything under Other Works are published for public viewing. Feel free to upload! 2"

Speaking of updates: where did the pages of earlier New Additions go? (i.e. those published more than a few minutes ago)

:-) Thomas F Abrahamsson replies: "You can find them under "Recent Additions" under "What’s New" in the navigation bar."

If you like me have several accounts (one for Sf&F one for FanArt and one for Wyverns) you can upplod other works from each one of them. Does that mean you will have several pages with other works? Cuase that would bee confusing...

:-) Thomas F Abrahamsson replies: "Yes, you will get an "Other Works" tab for each area you have an account in. You can post NG (non-genre) art in the SF&F Other Works tab, NG stories/poems in the Wyverns Library Other Works tab and NG fanart in the FanQuarter Other Works tab. //Monica"

I am confused. Why are appearing three pics in the "other works" tab of my gallery? One is a fantasy warrior http://http://www.elfwood.com/~nathie/BadGuysProject-The_Lawmak---er.3511720.htmlMissing ! one a pirate and one a sci-fi picture. I mean did I chose the keywords wrong? Is there any chance to get them into my main gallery? I could understand that if it was a pic of real persons, but they are fantasy/sci-fi related. I have looked further for any help regarding the "other works" tab, but I have found only this here. Please excuse If I placed my question in the wrong comments and thank you in advance!
nathie

:-) Thomas F Abrahamsson replies: "The keywords are used for the search engines. The reason your pictures are published in the Other Works tab is that they’re what we call NG (non-genre), meaning historical figures, such as knights and the like, are not viewed to be fantasy by themselves. As such they’re moved to the Other Works tab where you can either let them stay, or you can choose to explain in the description why they’re fantasy, for example "He just slayed a dragon" and then resubmit it. With a fantasy element in the description it will be accepted in the SF&F area. //Monica...Elfwood Head Moderator and Forest Manager"
