| 3 Jan 2003 | Laivine | Wow...I mean, I cannot believe you just [called] Tolkiens elves generic. I cannot believe either that I am letting it make me furious. My dear fellow artist, let us have a chat, shall we? (Come on, you knew you were in for it when you drew this! ] Darling, generic just isn't the word. You see, about fifteen years went into the making of the Tolkien elvish language, legend and culture. (Yes, language; two of them!) He defined what you see here on our lovely elfwood, since he can safely be called the father of modern fantasy. Though perhaps girly in the films, it is an otherwordly people of grace and elegent old-ness. And since our wonderful race was built but forty or fifty years ago, it simply cannot be called "generic," which means such things as "old" and "stale." However, I must admit that your little traditional elf-sprite is quite cute, and it has a wonderful expression. God bless, my rant is done  oy... let me immerge from an absence from galleries to clarify this, as the apparent confusion found here kinda freaks me out too - I was in NO WAY meaning to imply that the Elves of Tolkien are generic! phew, YIKES. I think not I concur completely in the opinion of awe at the time and effort he took in creating such a rich, diverse and historic-feeling culture. Since we are chatting, I will ask you at this time to refer back to the sketch in question and note that "generic" and "general" are also used in reference to the leprechaun and "elf-sprite", indicating NOT that I was pointing out all Tolkien elves as generic (in which case all leprechauns would be generic and all my elf characters would be general) but rather those 2 portrayed as generally styled after those portrayed in the movie to imply the characteristics thereof which were in question without me attempting any resemblance to a specific character. In this sense "generic" applies not to all Tolkien-elves, nor all elves at all, but rather just those two pictured above. They have no specific face or associated name, merely traits, and are thus generic. ~ "pertaining or appropriate to large classes or their characteristics; -- opposed to specific" www.dictionary.com ... It's been pleasant "chatting" with you, I hope you may feel calmed on the matter now. ~Alex | |
| 28 Feb 2003 | Carly Faktor | I always thought elves would be pretty tall. Your littler elf is amazingly similar in size to elves of Elfquest. Anyway, nobodys mentioned yet that its great drawing 2 Elfquest elves are around 4 feet tall. Love the leaprachan. however you spell that. | |

| 6 Jun 2003 | Kaiti | Shows potential, but a major let down is the length of the summary, it's annoying and kida turns people away. Picture looks like a rough copy to a better pic that isnt there, try just fixing it up... | |
| 11 May 2007 | Anonymous | i just read crissy girl's comment and i have a message for her. "you need to stop pushing the q tip in when there is resistance." ~Chandler Bing | |
| 8 Aug 2007 | Jordan ´hobbit´ Renner | Hmm. An interesting point. Before the movies came out I had the opposite problem- explaining to people how the elves from LotR weren't like either faeries (the eternally beautiful but short kind of elf) or like Santa's elves (which are neither pretty nor tall- I think they look more like gnomes, honestly) but being both tall and eternally beautiful. I love the pic- it is hilarious.
Can honestly say that I think the movie elves were still too short. | |
