My name is Jessica Schwartz. I am 15 years old. I love art. Actually, I didn't always enjoy art. In fact when I was younger, about seven or so, I didn't understand it at all. I hated reading and writing and I only drew when I was told to do so by a teacher. My grandfather, however, was a well known artist in my hometown. He would always draw pictures for me when I was little. I thought nothing about it really. It was just one of those things he did for me. Then one day I got sick; really sick. I was taken to the hospital and told I had bronchitis, a deadly disease if not treated properly. Because I was always extremely sick as a child the disease was even harder on my body. At night I had trouble breathing and eventually had to go on a respiratory machine. When my grandfather visited me, I asked him to draw me something. He drew me a mermaid. As a child I was always fascinated by merpeople and other mystical creatures; in fact I still am. It was the most beautiful mermaid I'd ever seen! It looked nothing like those mermaids you find in children’s books; you know, with the shells for clothing and the like. It was his creation and it inspired me beyond anything else. I spent the remainder of my time in the hospital trying to duplicate what he had drawn. None of my drawings came close to being as good as his, but I decided that last day in the hospital that I would draw something just as beautiful to give to him one day. I've spent seven years going to art classes and such to become a wonderful artist like my grandfather was and to draw him something beautiful. I never got the chance to show him my art...but I continue to draw with him as my inspiration.
