'The little fellow named Unico As cute as cute can be. An innocent boy was Unico So happy and so carefree...'
By far the cutest unicorn ever, Unico was the brainchild of a man known as the father of manga and the 'Japanese Walt Disney', Osamu Tezuka, who is responsible for pioneering many early animé and manga productions, as well as establishing many common animé conventions, like the big glistening eyes we all know and love. Unico starred in a Japanese pilot and two films that were released by Sanrio in the US in the early 80's. The two were shown often on the Disney channel in the late 80's, and many people still remember the now out-of-print films to this day.
OMG I thought i was the only person to remember Uncio! My name is Katie and I was actually named after the cat in Unico. Katie the Kitty to Call! lol. My sister named me cause she was obbsessed with Uncio. The one thing I really remeber is that robotic dragon that went GARHHHHHHHH over and over! lol. Man I havn't seen Unico in forever! I think I need to look on e-bay.... Justin Manteuffel replies: "Allow me to be the one to say, welcome back to the not-so-wide world of Unico! If you're interested in purchasing the films, a site called animeglore.com sells both films and the Japanese pilot digitally remastered on DVD. I have both, and they work quite well."
for some reason my mother detested "Unico". it took a lot of pestering her to convince her to tape it for me. that was a long time ago and i only got to watch it once or twice. mostly i remember Unico walking on black ground that was split and possibly had lava coming out and he was running trying to get away. it's a very vague memory, but i know it used to give me nightmares. perhaps that's why my mom didn't like it. i do like this picture though and knew it was Unico without having to read the name.Thank you very much for sharing your memory! I encourage everyone to share your Unico memories with me. The moment you remember is toward the end of the first film, 'Fantastic Adventures of Unico,' when Katy, Beezel and Unico are trying to escape the transformed Baron DeGhost.
I actually have the movies around here somewhere, so I could watch them again, but there are key moments I remember from years ago while the rest is a blur. As a kid and today, my favorite scene was/is when Unico went charging across the desert after his friend, who was trying to go to the ends of the Earth all by herself, and he turned into that beautiful, big winged unicorn and carried her off.
Yeah, he was a cutie. I'm glad there are people who remember him. Justin Manteuffel replies: "That was such a great scene. Very well made too. I'm thrilled that so many people remember the films. Thank you for sharing your memories!"
Even though I am a child of the eighties(litterally, I was born Feb. of 1980) I have never heard hide nor hair of this character ever until now! Could be that I jsut didn't watch that much telie. However your have inspired me with your fantastically cute and beautiful picture to look up this story. Thank you for drawing this and introducing me to a creature I'm sure I will love! Justin Manteuffel replies: "I'm so glad to have inspired you! There is quite the story behind little Unico. It's been part of my passion, being a fan. If you get the chance, I reccomend seeing both films. In my humble opinion, the first film has the better story, while the second is more artistic graphically."

I have had these images in my head for years of the characters in Unico, but just vaguely- I couldn't really see them clearly but I would just remember these cute little characters and the feeling the movie gave me as a kid. I drove me crazy trying to remember what the movie was or if it was just something I made up in my head as a kind, honestly, that's how vague the memories were. Just recently I saw a picture of unico on a friend's computer and I was so happy to have finally figured out! I definitely need to buy the dvds!
When i was about four or five, i used to watch "Unico" on nightmare island all day long for a number of years. over the years the movie got misplaced somewhere in my house, but i never really bothered to look for it for 12 years. last month the movie was found and when i watched it, somehow i knew every word by heart. all these years and the movie was still in the back of my head. somewhere. now Im starting to realize that the foundations of my childhood were based on Unico..... Unico is definitely a keeper for eternity

OMG!!!!! Unico, was one of the first cartoons that I showed my daughter when she was about 2 yrs old. I still get out the old VCR and watch it....I remember when I was a child I would get really scared when Toby would get confronted by the wizard....And when he started turning everybody into the wooden puppets....And the Trojan horse at the end of the earth....That brings back great memories....I think that I am going to go and watch it right now!!!! Thanks for the trip down memory lane....I LOVE UNICO!!!!!!!
