"The modrons are an alien race of clockwork creatures - part construct and part living being - that is native to the plane of Mechanus. They are unyielding servants to Law and Order, with no individual thoughts or goals."
They are part of the D&D Planescape campaign setting.
Anyone who's played "Planescape: Torment" will undoubtedly recognize that computer game as my primary source of inspiration...;-)
