FanArt: Margaret Hamilton as Elphaba

Medium: colored pencils on black construction paper

In 1900, L. Frank Baum's the Wonderful Wizard of Oz was published. In 1939, MGM's the Wizard of Oz arrived on movie screens.  In 1995, Gregory Maguire's novel of Wicked: the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West was published. In 2003, the musical of Wicked arrived on Broadway.

In the musical, several different actresses have already donned the black hat, the broomstick, and the green make-up to sing the life story of the Wicked Witch of the West. I figured that since people are already familiar with the visual icon of Margaret Hamilton who played the original Wicked Witch of the West in the MGM film, it might be neat to visually combine the old with the new. The dress in this illustration is the one worn during Act 2 in the musical. The  photorealistic source for  Margaret Hamilton's facial expression was from another movie she was in, called 13 Ghosts.

When viewed alongside all the other Wicked fanart on the web, this illustration is intended to serve as a reminder of the individual who we have in the back of our minds when we first think of the Wicked Witch of the West..

Cool pic. Though I might mention that "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" was published in 1900 not 1990. Just a nit.

:-) John H. Beckwith replies: "Eh, did I really type in 19... LOL Well, I'm fixing that typo pronto. You're the first person to catch the mistake, too. Thanks! "

Cool idea and very nicely done. Her face is very realistic!

I loved your picture. You got her face perfectly. I adore Elphaba, she is the BEST character in WICKED! I also just love Maggie. I have always loved the WWW, even before I read WICKED, which was in 2002, before I saw the musical the day that it premiered... October 30th, 2003!!

Thanks, Starlet! To be honest, this was one of those illustrations that I liked, but I didn’t expect anyone except me to find it cool to see the original MGM movie WWW as herself in the Wicked setting. I STILL like how Ms. Hamilton’s face came out here, too. LOL
