It seems that the black backgrounds are used for two reasons:
1. Lack of interest in drawing a background.
2. Hide any flaws in the picture with overwhelming darkness.

That may very well not be the case, but I think having the pictures sitting there, plain as day, will make it much easier to view and assess. Interesting gallery.
