FanArt: The little mermaid & others

Well, I was watching the little mermaid the other day, [yes I realise that I am 18 and it is a kids movie] and I had just looked at this Little Mermaid fan art by Chael Unnell [whose fan art link I have put here, but visit his SF&F gall'ry coz its awesome!] and I felt inspired to draw ariel. And then I decided to draw some of my own mer-people around her. Unfortunately coz she is still in it, I shouldn't upload it to SF&F, and so I am uploading it here. And I decided not to be too lazy this time and coloured it nicely, tho the background is still fairly boring, and a lot of detail was lost when I reduced the image :'( pity that.

Well anyways, about MY characters that I have here; Both of them don't actually exist as of yet, but are a sort of preliminary sketch for an aquatic race that dwells in my elemental story. [my elementals are on SF&F.] The male one, up the top, is a deep-sea dweller, hense his extreme paleness as not much light gets down there. He has trippy eyes, as its very dark down there, but he is effectively blind in any other environment. but to help cope with that, [as its hard enough to see down there anyway] he has extra senses.. ish. better hearing and touch etc, something akin to sonar. He has harder and more scales over his body than the female I drew, because of the pressure of deep water, and I think he has alge and little plants or animals [plankton?] growing in his hair. Now the female is a shallow dweller, and I don't really have much to say about her, cept that I think she is pretty and has a pretty red tail :3

drawn in pencil, coloured in photoshop.

Hiya, I'm glad my picture inspired you to draw mermaids, thats great! I think you did a lovely job, and I have to say I like both your mercharacters a bit more than Ariel, especially the bronzed girl, she rocks. Keep the nice art flowing.

2 Rebecca 'Mischa' Brown replies: "Yeasm, I like being inspired. It isn't something I get often anymore. I used to draw a lot of mermaids back in the day [because of course I am old and grey, heh] because I love the little mermaid as a movie, so that meant I also used to draw a lot of Ariel. and some where along the track I decided that I really didnt like those thingies they have around their waists in disney, and I did some mermaids sort of akin to the ones here [including still the prominence of more skin tones above the fishiness of it all still] but I hadn't for a while, so this was good, getting back into the swing of mermaids and merguys etc. Yay for that. ^_^ [I love my tiger shark guy and Black Tipped Reef Shark chick. oh btw, I have a pencil drawing, like a scene with those two in it, hasnt been actually published yet, still in the queue, but look out for it, its pretty, heheh] And you also, keep up the great art work, because yours is truely stunning in form and colour etc. and in utter coolness as well. ^_^"

Love the expressions (especially the little mermaid [don't know how to spell her real name =p] ) Also I like the other mermaids, and that they don't have that little thing around their wasts like the little mermaid (what is that?) Anyway good picture =) !

2 Rebecca 'Mischa' Brown replies: "Indeed what is that thingy around there waists??? Actually, I think it might be to make animation simpler... but yar. tis a silly thingy.

Anywho, glad you like my picture ^_^ ~offers plate of cookies~"

What a lucky merman, being surrounded by all those gorgeous mermaids. ^^

I like the coloring on the merman: It seems so realistic.

The two beautiful mermaids look really cool. You're right, she does have a pretty red tail. 2

Hey don't worry about being 18 and still liking Disney. For an entire term my sculpture class watched those movies (yes we did do our work.)
However I must be one of the few peole who aren't interested in Disney or grew up with it. So for me that term was, at times, tiring (No!,No more Bambi, please!). Lion King is the exception.

Disney movies don’t have to be only for kids. Ariel is pretty. Gotta say, no offense, but the silver guy looks like a freak.
