FanArt: Daria

Moderator's Choice - August 6th 2002.

This is Daria, with a background. The only Magic: The Gathering card she is featured on is Aura Blast

Bio: Daria is the youngest of the Nine Titans, powerful planeswalkers who led an assault on the evil plane of Phyrexia in order to cripple its lord, The Ineffable. Daria is one of the few of the Nine Titans to be native to a plane other than Dominaria. She is from Magic the Gathering's Homelands expansion's plane, Ulgrotha. Daria specializes in white magics, but like any planeswalker, is able to trap each of the five colors of magic with ease.

That's a nice pic you've got there! I like her staff and the background.

By the way, let me give you a little advise... Don't do your figures posing for photos! That often takes all the "life" from pictures and makes them boring for the viewer - even if they are good (and yours surely is good).

:-) Petter Dahl replies: "You're right that they might take the life from the pictures. However, in this particular case, I wanted to put all the nine Titans together in one picture, and so I needed all in a pose. One or two of them not in a pose would look odd when the rest of them do. I will probably try more non-posing pics after the Titans 2"

Okay, I know I'm no Picasso when it comes to art, but....drop the background, AND the polka dots. Any self-respecting armorist is NOT going to put polka dots on armor. It just screams "I don't want to hurt you, I want to be your friend!" on the battle field.

:-) Petter Dahl replies: "I might change the armor details so The Dots (tm)aren't so predominant. The dots aren't supposed to be polka dots, they are the holes in the chain links that hold the mail together."

Hey, congrats on MC! I have to agree the head is either too small, or the hips are a bit too wide and long. Hands are a bit small also.

I REALLY like the background. I REALLY like the foreground...but there doesn't seem to be anything linking the two. Very tiny brushstrokes on a separate layer (if you use Photoshop) might help making grass. If you don't want to make grass, then maybe put the rock you're thinking of using somewhere VERY CLOSE to her. The trees are great....maybe even a tree close to her will help pull it together.

Anyway, That cape is probably my favorite thing. It's a different design, very nice 2

:-) Petter Dahl replies: "I think the problem is the hips, more than her head. Her hand might be a fraction small, too. Thanks for the ideas for combining the foreground with the background. I might give them all a try. I'm happy you like the cape, it's fun making interesting clothes like that, and even better when people take time to notice them 2"

She looks kinda ditzy...not that it's aproblem. But I don't much like her face, in other words, she's ugly

:-) Petter Dahl replies: "I don't think she's ugly, but ditzy might not be far off. "

Any one ever stop to consider that the so called "poka-dots" make it look like chain maille? Chain maille boots...Hmmmm...

:-) Petter Dahl replies: "Yep, that's what they were supposed to be. A chainmail tunic and chainmail leggings / boots. Just in case someone was stupid enough to attack a planeswalker with some weapon."

I just encourage criticisers to use an email address when they post, so they can discuss it with the artist.

And I like this and the other images here a lot. These artists draw better than I can, so I try to encourage them.

:-) Petter Dahl replies: "Thanks, Oromis. If you ever get an Elfwood site, let me know 2"

Good addition, however, the feet kind of blend into the background instead of being well-defined such as on the no-background one.

:-) Petter Dahl replies: "The feet blending into the background was my attempt at making it look like some of the grass was covering her feet, though adding some invividual strands would show that effect better, methinks. "

Like someone up there said, I think you need to do something to try and bring the background and foreground together. That cape is definitely cool, but just one thing on The Dots (yes, they're striking yet again)... if they're to make her boots etc look like chain mail, as you say they are, that means we've got a purple metal and a blue metal. Now I have no idea where these titans come from, and maybe on their world/plane/whatever they have such stuff, but I just thought I'd point out that generally such metals don't happen. Maybe the chain mail is enameled? Which would be an absolute pain for the armourer...

:-) Petter Dahl replies: "Thanks for the suggestions 2 As for the purple and light blue chainmail, there is a reason why she can wear them. Daria is a planeswalker, an immortal and powerful sorceress, and one of the more interesting powers every planeswalker has is that of making their physical bodies look like anything they want them to. Since turning into a mauve gorilla with huge pixie wings isn't beyond them, having purple chainmail isn't either 2 Luckily, no smith has had to labor making Daria's armor, she can simply want it to become purple, and it will."

dont forget to say that the backround is a screenshot from Everquest =) (Those planes of Karana are hard to miss!) ALthough you did modify the backround nicely

:-) Petter Dahl replies: "Sharp eye you have there! Yes, they are the plains of Karana, but I wanted her surroundings to have a more savannah kind of feel to them, which I think I managed to get down right."

Just in case you did not know, the Ineffable's name is actually Yawgmoth. Might have saved you a coupel seconds typing lol.

:-) Petter Dahl replies: "Heheh, I know that, I was just trying not to be 'blasphemous' to him. It's a whole thing when you're a member of www.phyrexia.com"
