I recently came across something in Elfwood that appalled me. There is an organization of artists who are devoted to keeping Fan Art out of Elfwood. They claim that Fan Art is uncreative and detrimental. What a load of garbage. Fan Art is not tracing. It is a new representation of an existing idea. Guess what...it's no different than drawing a rose because you like it. Every dragon in Elfwood is expounding on an existing idea. Why is being a fan of a comic book or movie any different than being a fan of mythology or nature? So, to anyone out there who believes Fan Art to be a lesser form of art, I pity you. You will never truly appreciate the full value and power of art.

Nice drawing skill, however, i truly appreciate artists who can make up their own characters instead of just re-drawing someone else's character..

ps- your knowledge of star wars is horrid. a wookie in clothing who still appreciates his heritage is hypocrisy(and boots? wookie feet just wouldnt do!) a former imperial guard would no longer wear such a helmet that carries with it such a distinct symbolism to the imperials, these drawings are probably fun imaginary characters to you and it must be fun to mix and match different things with pre-made character/races.. but in the "star wars galaxy" it just wouldn't go.

    pps- nice purple shirt

:-) Sean C. Riley replies: ""however, i truly appreciate artists who can make up their own characters instead of just re-drawing someone else's character.." -- Perhaps you should look at my other gallery (or even some of my own original characters in this very gallery). Don't come down on fan-artists. There's nothing new under the sun, and certainly nothing wrong with paying homage to something you love with your own rendition of it.

"your knowledge of star wars is horrid" --- Okay, seriously. Its time to geek out, because you've thrown down the gauntlet.

First of all, its hard to take criticism about my Star Wars knowledge from someone who mispells "wookiee". 12 As for your specific issues...get a grip. There's nothing hypocritical about a wookiee in a jacket and boots (show me the anatomical structure of wookiee feet, and maybe I'll listen to your random gripe). In fact, they *gasp* set the character apart a bit so he isn't like every other freakin' wookiee ever imagined. As for the "supposed" (as the description states) former Imperial guard...why would you begin to imagine he wouldn't wear the helmet because of its symbolism? He's a bounty hunter who wishes to inspire fear. Those helmets do a pretty dang good job of it. If he was an Imperial loyalist, all the more reason to wear it.

In short, its pretty clear that these things "just wouldn't go" in your narrow view of the Star Wars galaxy. But that's the beautiful thing about a fantasy like Star Wars...its nearly limitless, much like true imagination. You might want to look into it."

You have an excellent point about fanart, and I agree with you totally. Just because you're drawing someone else's ideas doesn't mean you can't do something totally creative with them. By the way, love you're style, even though I am a bit more partial to anime. Seriously, you're art ROCKS!

Fan art, creative art, hell crappy art... If you like to draw or enjoy drawing then do so. Leave constructive criticism, dont bash an artist because the type of art he/she does. I think you are an awesome artist man, keep up the good work. I love starwars, even though i have never read any of the books (I'm just more into fantasy fiction reading), but i play SWG online. Awesome work keep em coming.

I liked your "geek out" rant above. Thought it was appropriately given, reminds me of the times when I've had to do the same thing.

I agree whole-heartedly about fanart being creative. The problem is that some people use it as an excuse to draw lazily. This is also my gripe about folks who draw in anime-style. If you're going to do it, then do it. Don't copy every single catgirl, formless animal, shy girl, magic-using buff guy, etc., that's already in existance. Why would you do that? I don't know.

That said, I would like more out of you! With a gallery description like yours, I was expecting the sky to be the limit, but instead it ended up like every other gallery of a good artist who likes Star Wars. Go for broke 1

:-) Sean C. Riley replies: "Sadly, I've become a lazy bastard. It's the sad truth that as a person's life gets busier, he has less and less time for his passions. Since many of these were drawn, I've gotten married, had a kid, various jobs, etc. Plus, despite my defense of fan art, most of my art tends to be original works (see my main Elfwood gallery). Nevertheless, I'll try to keep the gallery updated. 2"

He is Like a Fat Version of Qui-Gon Jinn only not as skilled in the jedi arts

:-) Sean C. Riley replies: "Totally untrue. I'm a master of the "Battle Feasting" and "Telekinetic Twinkie" Force techniques."
