FanArt: End of an Era

Depiction of the destruction of Terra from the video game Final Fantasy IX from the view point of the village Bran Bal.

I'v noticed that there is very little or no fan art for Terra, Bran Bal or the genomes (the people in the picture). All three seem to get left out in favour of Kuja or Zidane (and others). It seems a shame as Terra is such a beuatiful, surreal location. This picture was done, in part, to rectify this.

I'll admit it's not completely true to the game, but finding any decent reference pictures is a nightmare (I went of memory that, though I'd played that section a week or two prior to doing the sketch, was poor as any 'non-essential' facts were forgoten infavour of exam revision. Also used two rather pixelated screenshots I found in an old gaming magazine I still had lying around) I think the purple roofs come from another section of the game, Cleyra.

Bran Bal was chosen because I was vaguely wondering what their reaction would have been to Kuja's destruction of their home. It was probably a blank stare towards the fireworks and some knowledge, deep down, that things weren't going to be the same in the morning (a metaphorical morning as Terra apparently has no day-night cycle)

This was done in photshop elements taking anywhere between 40-50 hours. Worked on from mid October 07 to early Jan 08. The possibly the largest and certainly the most complex picture I have done on computer. It was a nice way of breaking in the new laptop. I can firmly say I learnt a lot doing this picture.

On a side note, this picture was done mostly while listening to various bits of Final Fantasy music. There's a line in a Fan song called 'Chocobo Robo Voice' that goes "it [FF music] is the only thing I'll listen too/ oh sure one day it'll drive me insane.." It's sung to the chocobo theme for those who know what that is. Draw your own conclusions.

Amazing colours, and such an imagination. That’s very very nice. Good work. 2

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "Had to use the imagination- there are very few screenshots of this part of the game and then they are low resolution so details are difficult to distinguish. "

Yes, great colors, but I really like the pool!

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "The pool was the quickest and easiest part of the picture."

Very impressive detail. I can tell you spent a lot of time on this picture, and I like that you chose to draw a subject that isn’t depicted often. I’ve only played FF9 once so far, but you captured the ethereal beauty of Terra well here. The perspective is nicely done and the reflection in the water is very rich. The characters are a little out of proortion, but each part of them individually is painted well. Nicely done.

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "That’s exactly why I wanted to draw Terra, no one else seems to and it’s a very beautiful place. I’ve never really noticed whether or not any of the genomes were out of proportion, that might have been what was bugging me. I intend to draw more lesser covered characters/events/locations from games and tv in the future. I think I’ll make a personal vendetta out of it."
