I got the impression that Snape had something bad happen to him, like his entire family died or something like that, and he put this sort of mask on. He got so carried away with hiding this fact that Snape became evil and treated everyone like it was their falt that his family died, and after, lets say, thirty years he *finally* takes off his mask and everyone knows why he was so mean.
