| 29 May 2004 | Nickie | its a great picture...but i just have to ask...was the movi The Legend a rip off of Lord Of The Rings? i hope you dont get mad, i still love the pic, it just seems to be alot like LOTR Jennifer Pitcock Doneske replies: "Well, though all fiction is based on previous ideas, no, Legend was in no way directly inspired by nor based on The Lord of the Rings.
LoTR did exist at the time the screenplay for Legend was written (the three books of LoTR were published in the 50's, and the screenplay for Legend was written in the early 80's), but William Hjortsberg (the screenwriter) based Legend on classical fairytales and classical fairytale themes, not on any of Tolkien's work. And, really, other than the "good vs. evil" theme of both works (which is the theme of virtually all works in the Fantasy genre), I'm not really sure where you're seeing similarities. There aren't really any corrolates between the two works, whether in characters, in themes, or in plot. Legend shares much in common with classical fairtytales (you can find correlates within it to such stories as "Sleeping Beauty," "Beauty and the Beast," "Snow White," "Rapunzel," and many other tales from the Brothers Grimm, Aesop, Hans Christian Andersen, et al), but honestly, it shares very little in common with Tolkien's works, which were inspired in part by ancient British folklore (older and "darker" than the fairytales upon which Legend was based) and in part by an allegorical and symbolic representation of events of Tolkien's day (such as World War II, Nazi Germany and Nazi persecution of Jews, and comments about power and the corruptibility that can come with it, as it did for both Sarumon in LoTR and a great many German officers under Hitler's rule in WWII). | 13 Aug 2005 | sarah | Hi jennifer may i first start by telling that you work is amazing, i too share the love of this movie and have done for many a year. However i have been distraught of late as the movie i had was taped years ago from the tv and as you can imagine is well worn and no longer watchable. I have tried desperately to recover the movie that i saw, but proves impossible as the ones that you buy today are completely different. I've tried everything bought loads of ebay. Still nothing,i feel that i am starting to go mad and i think my friends and family are getting a little bit worried!! If you do know anything on this matter please please let me know? Thanks i am such a fanatic that i want to get the ring made for my engagement (also its been said that my boyfriend looks a bit like tom himself.) Jennifer Pitcock Doneske replies: "I know what you mean about wearing the tape out--I did that long ago with the original tape of Legend I had. I'm not quite sure, though, what you mean by "the ones that you buy today are completely different." If you mean that the copies of the movie that you buy today are completely different, I'm not sure what you're getting at, since it's all the same movie and came from exactly the same original canister of film.
