The riding man on the horse is a theme John often used in his pictures. However, he does
not do any heroic riders, instead they express a longing and melanchony - like in the
picture of the prince riding in the moonlight. Another common
theme is the princess, who John painted traditionally with long, golden hair and with
the crown on her head.
The first volume of Bland Tomtar och Troll (Among Pixies and Trolls), a collection of
fairy-tales written by several Swedish authors, was published in 1907. Bauer was
commissioned to illustrate the tales and through these pictures became our great
fairy-tale artist. The mature artist emerges in the volumes of 1912-15. In these, we find
many of John Bauer's most famous pictures such as Princess Tuvstarr, forever
contemplating the black waters of the tarn.
The delicate, fragile Princess is closer to the flickering stars of the firmament than to the
human world.
One of Bauer's favourite figures is Humpe, a little troll with a gentle temper and a longing
for the daylight world of men. He first appears in 1912 in "The troll boy with day-light
eyes who became a forester" - a romantic story of Bauer's taste. Like many of Bauer's
favourites, Humpe was used in several different contexts; in 1917 he painted "Mother
Love".
